Well, i have shot up most of my first order of premixed lead/tin and want to mix some for my self. Think I have all the necessaries, lead, tin, big cast pot for for melting, etc. Have done a little casting but no mixing, any pointers or advice will be appreciated:coffee:

Tin blends (alloys) easily with Lead at easily attainable electric furnace temperatures. Mixing your own should be a simple process of calculating the weight of each metal needed for the alloy you plan to create, and then weighing out the components accordingly, getting the lead melted in the pot and then adding the tin.

I generally am not as picky when I mix my alloys. I do mix them in my casting pot though. I have a little note book by my casting equipment where I write down the date and % of materials in the pot. When I say I am not picky, I don't worry if I am off by a percentage point or two. To make sure that it doesn't get too far off from what I want, I run the pot dry on a regular basis and start over. My alloys don't get that complicated either, they are a combination of range recovery and WWs, or WW's and Linotype. Not that hard to keep track of.

Best wishes from the Boer ranch,

Joe

Thanks for the replies,
Melted and mixed 25 lb. lead and one tin yesterday. Every thing went like a breese.
my experience
Twenty five lb. lead in an old dutch oven is heavy!!! Best to have extra molds handy, wasn't accustom to handling that much lead at one time :coffee:

25 lbs?! Dang, my pot holds 200 lbs. I use enough molds to ladle out 75 lbs at a time, otherwise it takes ALL DAY. Been there, done that, don't want to go back.
