Ok. I have been loading 45 colt, 38 special, 357 and such, about 1000 each so far over the last couple weeks. I bought a 452651 mold through here, thinking 45 colt. I realized I could put this bullet in a 454 casull, ya-hoo.
now I am curious as to what will work. I have seen 2400 and all kinds of others.
the rifle primers is what is getting me. I thought primers and powder was the thing.
I have not reloaded 454 casull before. I have reloaded 10,000's and I research before going, even before the internet.
the rifle primer has confused me again. the firearm is a Taurus raging bull.
so help me out.
thanks

SAAMI spec on the .454 is 65,000 PSI max. The .454 uses a small rifle primer because pistol primers pierce around 53,000-55,000 PSI. There's nothing tricky about using small rifle primers; they work fine at much more modest pressure levels.

Tell me what pressure you want to load to with your 454651 bullet, and whether it's GC or plain base, and I'll give you some recommendations.

Groo here
Remember the 454 chamber is usually cut to minimum .
The bullet will need to be sized to .451-.452 [if .452 will fit]
The Taurus will have looser chambers than a Freedom Arms but both will be tight.
Also, be sure your loading dies say 454 or 454/45 colt , as a 45colt die will not size the case small enough in many cases.

Just a quick note years ago when they were introduced I found throats on 2 raging bulls at .454
