Gentlemen--The local GS found a single cartridge in a bunch of junk they bought that is marked .900 nitro. I've looked on the web but cannot find any data on a .900 Nitro. Does anyone here have any info or specs on it? It's a big cartridge maybe 4-5" long rimmed case and about an inch in dia. with a flat point (almost full caliber) jacketed bullet.

I have some 700's and 600's but never seen larger...

Sounds familiar but the only one I've seen near that size was the .950 JDJ

Dunno which would be worse, to be on the front end of that thing when it goes off, or on the back end!!! GW

I've have a 4 Bore that is chambered for 4" long brass and uses a .935 diameter bullets but all my brass is stamped "No. 4". I don't believe I have seen a .900 Nitro, can you post a picture of it?

If I get over there in the next couple of days I'll take some pics and my calipers for measurements. The GS owner is just as curious as I am.

I found a listing and some photos on google, looks like a small artillery round.

IIRC, somebody in Europe made a revolver in 900 for grins but never shot it. Would have made a few cases but they are probably dummys.

I remember reading about that, it was cap and ball though so no cartridges involved.

If I remember correctly the 700 nitro was a 12 gauge brass shell neck down just a little. I believe I read this in one of the Gun magazines years ago. A 900 would be around 23 mm. That would be a big case just hold the bullet. Wonder what the bullet weight would have been ? Probably in the 950-1200 grn range?

There is no way a 700 Nitro is a necked-down 12ga... im looking at one right now. will post pics. getting the missus to do the pics.

Double AA battery for reference. 700 and 600 Nitro cases. Will post headstamp pic next. Unless I have a 700 Nitro "basic" case it is way too long for a 12ga chamber. I have two in front of me that are stamped HH and Bertram (BB) and they are almost the same and have 3 or 4 others someplace as well. All different headstamps. I think one of the ohters is A Square but not 100% certain.

country gent, after re-reading our posts I want to make sure that everybody knows that I was maybe over-excited (in a kid on Christmas kinda way) posting what I was looking at in front of me and in no way was I trying to argue with your post. In fact I guess if someone were to use the 12ga in a 700 as a 38spl is used in a 357 it may work. I dont know. I do apologize if you took offense to my rather quick response. I have a lot of older brass 12ga shells of different manufacture in the shop for reference but the shop is not happening until tomorrow. On that note, I cant wait to see a pic of the 900!

The .600 Nitro takes a 900 gr. bullet. Some nomenclature confusion, perhaps?

I shoot Rockrat's 850 grainer out of my 50 bmg so a 900 should be a smidge more.

Stopped by the GS today and took a couple pics and some measurements. Case is 3.5" long, 1" diameter and case rim dia is 1.125. Bullet diameter is .960. The caliper gives some perspective.

Looks like a chiropractor's best friend... Or maybe a spinal surgeon. That's awesome! Maybe write to holland and holland to see what they know about it?

OMG! That's the real deal, looks like a hotchkiss revolving cannon round. I wonder if it was a small artillery round? Years ago I was at a decoy show in Tuckerton, NJ and an old fella was selling punt gun shells, some were 2" diameter and about a foot long. I wish I had bought a few of them now.

Based on the hand stamped nature of the 'head stamp' I'm guessing this is a one-off, or at least very limited project kind of thing. I've seen some interesting things put together for cartridge collectors groups and the like. I doubt this went with a gun.

NZ--I had been a bit suspicious of the headstamp myself. If it was mine I'd take it apart to see if there is any powder etc. The bullet has a knurled crimp groove in it so there is a fair bit of attention to detail.

lots of times they will mill the "old" stamp off then re-stamp and let age. looks home made but great job.
