Hope this is right forum to ask! I have a 45 acp upper I am reloading for with a noe 200gr HP mold. I am using tightrope with 5gr. Powder coated. I am getting soot on ever case, am getting got accurate shoots out to75 and 100yards. Same load I shoot out of several pistols with no soot. Any help or ideas I would appreciate

Shooting while using a tightrope must be be pretty tricky! :kidding:

I guess tightrope is tighgroup, regardless. Soot usually means not enough pressure to seal the case; it's not going to harm anything and if it's accurate for you I'd leave it at that.

I'm following this post closely. I get soot on my 9mm ar9 brasss, but none on the same rounds fired from pistol. On the not enough pressure note...are we talking crimp pressure or dwell time in the chamber..pressure?

Maxreloader yes titegroup, sorry typing on phone.

If it were me, I’d check published data to see if there was room to bump the load up a tad. Also look for pressure signs on brass, primers etc. I’ve had several loads that were fairly accurate but dirty/sooty as ****. Bump up the load a tad, and the powder burns cleaner...like surprisingly cleaner.
•WARNING-check the load data for safety. I once had an electric scale that measured 0.7-0.8 grains light before it warmed up properly. With Titegroup, 0.8gr is a significantly big difference on 45acp.

Highly likely that the 45 ACP AR upper is blowback.
Blowback guns typically have more sooty brass than locked breach guns.

Is you AR recoil buffer heavy enough?
It should be around 7 or 8 Oz.
Lookup the weight of the Hahn AR 45 buffer.

Also an extra power recoil spring is a good idea.
The spring and the recoil buffer are the only thing keeping the chamber closed.
More spring pressure and buffer weight means less soot on brass.

I think edp2k nailed it. My hi-point carbine was sooty and had some unburned powder with my lighter pistol loads. Bumped my 4.2 of red dot to 4.6 and gained 150 fps and clean cases. My 200 grain bullet blue dot loads won't work worth a dang in the blowback action, wide velocity spread and lots of unburned.

Are you getting god accuracy or not? I can't tell from the original post.

Titegroup is known for getting a scorched case. If your getting good accuracy I wouldn't worry too much. If your not getting good accuracy I'd try a different load.

Hodgdon site says you can go 5.4g Titegroup with a 200g cast.

As said above, prob a little more pressure needed.

Just curious, what make 45 AR do you have ? I have an Olympic Arms - very happy with it.

reddog81 yes I am getting very good accuracy out of this load

gunslinger I have the same upper. I am happy with it also. only problem I have with it is that my bolt carrier bent my bolt catch when it locks open. so I had to get a more robust locking catch

edp2k thanks I will look that up today and check. I know I but a light spring in to stop it from bending my bolt lock as I had to replace that

gunslinger I was just being lazy I might have to just load for rifle and pistols separately

Haha, lazy isn't always bad !!
I run a 200g cast hp as my standard 45acp.
I load 5.4g 231 which is just under max for cast.
Now the bolt catch is an interesting comment, I noticed mine wasn't locking open all the time last shooting session - something to look into, thanks !

What's your take on the Olympic mags ?
H. E. double hockey sticks to load more than 10 !
Thats one stiff spring !

same here! by the time I get to 15 round finger are sore. about all I will load. I seen they had a adapter to load the but not cheap.

yes that is how I noticed my catch bent it stop holding bolt open. them was hard to move catch by fingers. took it out laid it on flat surface. it was bent forward beat it flat worked for awhile! after a few mags though it started to do it again. so I shorted my spring a little and bought a more stout catch

Try a longer 9-10 oz blowback pistol buffer. Should keep the bolt closed longer and limit how far the BCG goes so that it doesn't go back as far/fast because of the additional weight, and is longer so the bolt and buffer don't have as much of a running start before hitting the bolt catch. Here's a 7.8 oz ss one I've made for a 9mm I run suppressed. Kak has adjustable weight ones that go up to 10 oz.

moleman thank you. i will look into that.

Thought I added the link......Guess I need more coffee https://www.kakindustry.com/ar-15-parts/lower-parts/buffer-tubes-and-parts/ar15-config-9mm-buffer-system

IMO they're not worth the price, if you have a lathe they're simple enough to make and they sell the rubber bumpers for $1 each if you want to make your own. You can get the tungsten weights to put in it.

think I might have decided on a kaw Valley 10 oz tungsten buffer. see if that slows down blow back a little bit to get a better burn

Thanks for the link.
Whew, pricy !
If you go ahead and get it, let us know how it goes.

On an older thought, was it Olympic that had the mag loader "helper" ?

bobby

yes I seen it about a month ago on their sight. but just looked and can't seem to find it now

bobby

might just call them and see if it is available.

for those interested the kaw Valley buffer and their spring was maybe to much! would not throw last few pieces of brass out. maybe was to heavy. tried it with a standard spring was a little better but still had some hang ups and did not clean brass up any. plus move load up to 5.2 and no change in soot

The chamber on your upper may be a bit looser than your pistols. Increasing buffer weight and spring tension is very good advise. Years ago I was close to starting on a 45 acp FAL conversion but I never went through with it. I do have a yugo mauser that I converted with a Rhinelander kit. Quiet as a .22 and one hole at 50 yds.

My 9mm AR has alot of soot, its just the bolt opening. It will work with a light buffer, but your really need 2lbs or so of bolt and buffer in a blowback 9mm. Those buffers are available, but not cheap. I made 2 buffers out of brass for $25 with a chunk of brass left for another small project. And I could make it longer so no spacer required in the buffer tube. I know in mine you can use a rifle or carbine spring. Rifle spring will help hold the bolt closed.
