also is IC choke acceptable? and they are for smoothbores right? with brennekes they have an affixed wad of felt don't they? how does 50 yard+ accuracy compare to the Winchester rifled slugs?? ( I think they are considered foster type)
thanks a lot!-Travis

I found them to be WAY better, Win not really hit on a paper plate at 90yds while Brennekes (sp) were about a 3 inch group. That with an Ithica 37 deerslayer featherweight in 16 ga. Yes, wad is screwd into the base.
I found Remington sluggers to be almost as tight a group, about 4 inches and much cheaper.

Merry Christmas!
IC will be just fine and often gives better accuracy.
Each gun is different in what ammo it likes.

They make them for smooth and rifled bores. They are much better killers than rem/wra old fashioned ones.

The rifled ones, in my rifled 870, will put 3 in a playing card at 100.

Well, I tried several different slugs out of my 870P with smooth-bore and at 50 meters/yards.

Best accuracy I got was with Federal TruBall slugs:

210182

But the Rio Brenneke was not bad:

210183

Winchester Rackmaster was not bad neither:

210184

Remington Slugger was good too ....

210185

The worst for me were the Challenger/Gualandi Dangerous Game Slug slugs ... they gave me random flyers ...

210186

Hope this helps ....
Faustus

ps.: Gun was an 870 Police with fixed IC choke .... and rifle sights ...

For sabots in a rifled barrel .... my best result so far is from a Hastings rifled barrel with Federal Power-Shok sabots ...

That combo gives me 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inch groups at 100 meters/yards.

Have you tried Remington accutips? If not, give them a shot. Bet you can tighten up those groups.

thanks for telling me about the trueball slugs, never seen em'. as for the brennekes, I looked at the link, and the one I was thinking of is the magnum classic, which despite the name is a 2 3/4" shell. which is fine by me, plenty of power without excess recoil. I really need to get either a scope or there was a 24 in. smoothbore with rifle sights on brownells for sale... I cant remember if it was 120 or 220? but sighting with the beads, even the double beads on the rib, is a lot of guesswork, and rifle sights would help a lot. too bad they only make them for install on non ribbed barrels...

In non handloaded slugs used to use BRI 50 cal saboted slugs, wonder how those compare Handloading is fun tho :)

Hmmmmm ... I tried the AccuTips with an H&R USH slug gun ... but I only got 4 inch groups with that combo and gun. I haven't tried the AccuTips with the Hastings barrel yet ... I think I still have a couple of boxes . Once I have done the Timney trigger upgrade to my 870 ... I think I will give it a try. You never know.

Thanks Blood Trail for reminding me of those.

thanks for telling me about the trueball slugs, never seen em'. ...

The Federal TruBall slugs are not only accurate they performed also very well in my penetration test ... better than the Brennekes that I had.

Another lesser known slug I discovered this year is the Estate 1 ounce. It seems to be a Truball, but without the ball. I got better groups than any other slug with those in an 870 I put together, but I couldn't find real Brenneke slugs that day. I've have yet to see Brenneke classic (not KO) slugs shoot poorly in any gun. Any rifled slug is fine in most chokes, but for accuracy cylinder or improved cylinder is usually the way to go.

I will say this....Shooting my wife's 20ga. Remington 870 with an IC choke at 50 yards I got three slugs to clover leaf at 50 yards. It was a bead sighted gun with vent rib off bench. The slugs were the 15 pack of Remington sluggers.

ok, I will have to try the sluggers out. I used them a long time ago, I think in a single shot, but I haven't tried them out in my new moss 500 28" with IC choke
