Went to a range with a buddy Sunday to practice some 3 gun. We were on a shorter 30 yard bay and just doing some basic stuff. Part of our stage was a slug (Lyman 525gn in a CB-1114-12 over 30 gn WSF in a 2-3/4" Fiochhi Hull) to a 30 yard full size USPSA AR500 plate. I had painted a stripe down the center from the "head" all the way down. Time after time my slug hit in that stripe in the upper half shot from my Rem 870 w/ IC choke. Later I started shooting some 6" round plates at 25-30 yards with them as well. That was a lot of fun. My buddy shot some of my slugs out of his Steoger M3K at some Full size IPSC paper at 30 yards too and man did that gun love them too! We had put some small red square stickers on them as aiming points on 2 of the 3. He was touching the 2 red squares on those two and put not only the slug but the wad into the Alpha zone but the wad as well. lol

the lyman 525gr, is that the kind that looks like a giant airgun pellet? does it work ok in smoothbores? and you said it fit in shot-style wad? if it shoots well in smoothbores, do you have any loads/advice? I have a Mossberg 500 with 28" smoothbore and the mmost open choke I have is improved cyl., which I noticed that's what you are running. I would be using this for pigs and deer, hopfully up to 75 yards. thanks-Travis

Yes, its called the Lyman 525 Sabot slug. I run them in CB-1114-12 wads and they fit great. I failed to mention above I use a BPI Powder Cup Gas Seal (no longer available) between the wad and powder mostly for stack height. Going to try the X12X gas seal at some point. They are a great smoothbore slug. Some people like the Lee molds but I have never tried them. Tons of info here. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?174745-Official-Lyman-12ga-Sabot-Slug-Mould-525-grain-Load-Data-Thread

I've plunked two deer this year with home cast slugs . The first was in a 10 gauge with Bikerbeans .730" 730 grainer wrapped with .010" of Mylar . The second was with the the Russian slug for the 10 gauge that has the same look as the Lyman 525 but weighs 620 grains and that one fits inside the SP-10 Shot cup . As I type this I am sitting in a tree with a 16 gauge double and loaded in the gun are the Russian version of the Lyman 525 for a 16 gauge that weighs about 370 grains , that one sits nicely in the REM SP-16 wad .
