Howdy again.

It has been a long time since I shot a black powder pistol and rifle, both in .45 caliber and gathering dust. My rifle is flintlock and the pistol uses caps.

I found a good excuse to get them back out.

Yesterday, I could came about a really nice custom built flintlock replica of a Lehigh Valley PA squirrel rifle. It is, gulp, .28 caliber!

I do mold my own for various cartridges on occasions.

Research turned up NO .28 caliber round ball molds.

The closest thing to a factory ball that will fit is a # 2 Buckshot, which is .27. I "could" make do with these but they also seem to be impossible to find.

Is there a source for .28 round ball -- OR -- a mold without having to have a custom mold made?

Would appreciate any and all suggestions.

PS: the actual bore on this one is .290 if that helps. I was thinking patch and .28 ball combination would be perfect. # 2 Buckshot could work with thick patch IF I could find any.

THANKS and y'all be good. Bo in western NC

There is a nice DC 0.270 mold on eBay I saw a day or two ago.

Posts #'s 3 & 4 are right on. Great mold made to exacting standards. Cheap, too.

looks like custom mold, unless you can juggle alloy in .30 RB mold to shrink to fit
or expand the .27 to get .28 RB

I'd just get the #2 bshot mold and patch tight. Super cheap from lee and drops alot at once. Try close to pure lead with 2%tin might drop from the mold bigger?

I may have enough #2 buck to spare some. If interested, PM me (or reply here) and I'll go look.

Woody. THANK YOU for the thoughtful offer. I may take you up on it if willing to find those # 2 buckshot.
I ordered a used .27 mold but they don't have handles and it may be a long time before I can get my
molding game going again.

Take care and Merry Christmas to all, Bo in western NC

bocash3, I posted an answer to your question on the ALR Forum as well. To wit, you may want to "beagle" a .270" RB mold if you can obtain one.

Thanks, Maven! I actually received a .270 Lyman 2-cavity mold in the mail today. It has been over 30 years since I molded bullets and it may be 6 months before I can use this, but at least I have it. Meanwhile, a generous member of this forum is sending a few # 2 buckshot to keep me going.

Y'all take care, Bo
