I just acquired a Ruger Blackhawk 357 mag. 6" barrel. Old 3 screw that looks brand new. I know the history on it and I KNOW only 2 boxes of shells have gone thru it.

I had(have) an old box of Winchester 125 grain magnums laying around. Well, I just fired them durn things and they have got to be the loudest pistol I have ever fired. Not done a 454 with it's 60000 cup/psi or whatever. Before I do, I'll be wearing foam earplugs, with stuffing inside earmuffs on top.

My ears are ringing and I had earmuffs on. :holysheep If I want light loads I'll load my 45 Colt upto 1275 or so. They pale in comparison.

The primers are completely flat. No ifs, ands or curvature. Methinks I'll load 357 mag cases to 38 special velocities and hunt wabbits. I sure ain't gonna go in the woods looking for medium game, expecting to pull the trigger without my bright yellow earmuffs on. Oooouuuch!!!!...and whatdya say???:holysheep

We probably would all be much better off if we wore electronic earmuffs when hunting. That gives us ear protection but allows us to hear better than normal.

The man has obviously never owned/fired one of the old .30 Carbine Blackhawks with milsurp FMJs. Talk about nasty!!

How old is that ammunition? I believe SAAMI specification on that went from 46,000 to 35,000 CUP. You might have some of the old stuff.

Dale, that would be great, but it won't make the tinnitus go away...

Nope. Don't care to if it's noticably more than the 357.

I'll stick with me big slow big bores for serious stuff.

willis, I think it maybe 4 or 5 years old is all.

hpdrifter, If you decide that gun is just too loud for you, let me know. I would probably buy it from you.

Slug the bore. I found one at .353 groove.

Sorta raises pressures a tad. That gun does the same thing to primers. And of coarse, higher pressure, more sound.

I would also measure the gap.

The first factory 454 ammo I shot was Winchester and it was the same way; nasty. I still have most of that box left.

My first revolter was an old style Ruger .357. Same problem, nasty report. I got rid of it and got a .44 blackhawk. The problem there was concussion. It took me a moment or two to figure out where I was after every shot. Couldn't see if I hit my target either (closed eyes? Nope - crossed, and out of focus). I think those smaller bores have a much sharper, more painful to the ears report. The .30 carbine, and .32 calibers like the .327 are really bad that way.

The Winchester 125 grain 357 Magnum factory loads are kinda nasty on account of the ball powder being used in an application where heavier bullets would be a bit more efficient. Those ball powders are kinda blasty anyway, and when you light one off with a somewhat light-for-caliber magnum handgun bullet--the report is rude to say the least. Had you fired these same loads at dawn or dusk, the fireball would have been pretty impressive, too.

Lotta 357 Magnums have gone downrange for me........I strongly prefer bullets/boolits weighing 150 grains+ in this caliber. Lyman #358156 (155 grain SWC/GC) and #358430 (195 grain RN) are long-time favorites of mine in this caliber, and more recently the 180 grain round flat-nose GC by 357 Maximum/Group Buy has shown promise in my BisHawk x 7.5".

ETA--Been there/done that with a Blackhawk in 30 Carbine. It shot well, better than any Carbine ever did--but the report with full-tilt loadings was NASTY, a plugs-and-muffs application if there ever was one. A friend who enjoys things like parachuting and rappelling tried the thing out, and loved it.

And welcome. For me, it was too dangerous. The range that Buckshot and I infest is only a couple miles from the San Andreas Fault, and that sort of report and concussion could set off earthquakes. I don't need that on my conscience.

Shot a pigeon off the top of an abandoned silo when I first got my .357 with max load 110's. Bad part about that was my head and shoulders were inside the bottom of the silo, you only do that once!

thats why ive never been a big fan of the .357. it obnotiously loud and doesnt kill a whole lot better then a .38 special. Noise is more of a problem for most begining shooters then recoil is. Ive had people shooting with me that went from a 3 inch .357 to a 6 inch 44 mag and about everyone of them including my wife said shed rather shoot the 44.

You are very right, LLoyd, I shoot my .44Mag a lot more often than I do the .357 Mag.
Concussion instead of sharp ringing ear blast.

357 loads are just plain loud! I never minded the recoil but I had to stuff my ears when shootng those, especialy when it was time to qual with the M19 snubby. I put cotton in my ears AND wore muffs. But having attended a few autopsies and having a fair collection of recovered slug i can say that what you hit with one of those WILL be hurting.

I'm glad yall agree, I thought I might just be a weenie.

9.3X62AL...I did shoot this thang at dusk and the fireball was ......impressive.

BTW....my house just got looted. Lost a 42" LCD boob tube, air compressor, chainsaw, weedeater, 5 guns and a few other small items..

Kinda ticked!!!!

My ears ring with the 357 even with hearing protection. That's why (at least part of the reason) I keep the loads down. More like 38 +P or something.

Now you just need to find the miscreant(s) and apply a few of those 125's in the appropriate places!! And, even if you miss, they will be deaf and half blind! [smilie=1:

i've noticed the recoil on the 357 full house loads is just about if not worse than my 44s or 45s. as for noise the lightest bullet i shoot is 158gr. ,i've not noticed
that much noise difference,of course i hear little of what my wife says and the range officer usually taps me on the shoulder to announce a cease-fire.

C'mon, guys - when shooting, one should ALWAYS wear hearing protection. No excuses...

I agree with EasyEd.

Since I can remember seeing, hearing, walking, etc... I've liked anything that goes bang and is destructive. Thirty something years ago it was bottle rockets, firecrackers, M-80s, 22 rifles, pistols etc... and, old toys, melons, fruits, vegies. You Know, anything I thought I could get away with without getting getting my rear tanned. My four most used words were "I didn't do it".

The only things that have changed is my ability to hear high and medium pitch sounds, the addition of higher powered pistols and rifles, the unavailability of m-80s, my apreciation of fruits, veggies, and melons, the "now" religous use of hearing protection, and my four most frequent words are "whadyasay".

I recently started working on a drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. It is a loud working environment. I'm 38 years old and my co-workers have to yell at me to communicate. It makes my job that much harder.

Please use hearing protection when enjoying our sport; 22s to 357s to 50 bmg.

As for the young ones, teach hearing protection as much as gun safety.
