I guess the .260 Remington was too long for the magazine?

At one time Springfield offered a 243 and 7mm-08 chamberings, so I don't see why it couldn't be chambered in 260. The 260 was still a wildcast when Springfield brought those other two chambers. Don't forget that those and the 308W work at a higher pressure then the 7.62 NATO that the M14 was designed for. I'm in no way saying it can't handle the higher pressure rounds as we know people do shoot the 308W from them. Probably with the higher pressure rounds it may be advisable to use a Schuster adjustable valve.

What I would like is if Springfield would again chamber the 358Win in the M1A

Now you're talking, but never going to happen. For reasons unknown the 358 was the round on the 308 case that didn't flourish like the others and it's probably one of the best!

I think that is pretty neat in that they chambered it for the 6.5 Creedmoor. I like it. Man, they need to let me win the lottery or something. I'll have to figure out how to get one. I think the 6.5 Creedmoor was a good choice versus the .260 Remington. The Creedmoor cartridge case is a little more short and thus the extra long pointy bullets don't protrude deeply into the case like they do on the .260 Rem, in order to fit in the magazine. But I could see someone putting on a .260 Rem barrel or even taking a chamber reamer to one maybe. But with the 6.5 CM cartridge there isn't much reason to convert it over though.

Of course converting a M1A over to .358 Win is doable. Someone did it here in this thread already:
