S&W .44 Magnum Mountain Gun (Video Review)

Hi folks! Everyone was very curtious and receptive to the video link I posted a few weeks ago when I joined this forum; so I thought I'd see if any big bore revolver fans out there might be interested in my newest video review of the S&W 629 Mountain Gun. Nice video. Enjoyed the split screen. Perhaps employ a close up of the gun as your talking with just the gun and hands with a contrasting but neutral background when going over the particular gun features.

You left out the 41 Mag and 45 Colt runs when talking about the other calibers, but I'll forgive you this time. [smilie=l:

Great review! I have always wanted a Mountain Gun in 45 Colt but never seemed to find the right deal on one.

Had a 629 Mountain Gun in 44 Magnum caliber come to the shop for a visit today. The owner wanted to set the gun up for use with cast boolits so cylinder throats were reamed to .432" from .429" and the forcing cone needed a little cleanup so it was recut with a custom made 9 degree cutter which cleaned it up nicely. While we had the cylinder out, the rear of the chambers was ever so slightly chamfered to ease loading.

I showed the owner some samples of Veral's LBT 250gr WFN-GC boolits and also some of the LBT 250gr OWC ojival wadcutters and suggested he make an order from Montana Bullet Works for these in their BHN 15 alloy with Veral's soft blue lube.

Overall I was favorably impressed with the fit and finish of the Mountain Gun, and another 6" barreled 629 showed the same degree of workmanship. Cylinder throat resizing, chamfer, and forcing cone recut was performed to both revolvers.

I expect a range report when he has a chance to load some of these WFN boolits and try them out.

That actually was not a gas check. None of the bullets I was firing had them. I’m not entirely sure what that was.

I have the first generation of that pistol. I bought it when it first came out, in the late 80's. I used to collect .44 magnum revolvers, but moved into varmint and target rifles since. Just discovering the joys of casting bullets and handloading for these guns.

I haven’t taken the plunge into bullet casting yet. Someday when I have more time for such things, I hope to give it a whirl.

Nice revolver ( I had a pair) but just too heavy to tote on a mountain.

Sold mine and bought a 329. Ammo weighs more than the gun.

"the gun that is left at home because it's too heavy is worthless when you need it."

Also a great CC gun when loaded with these.
