Anybody know if this bullet was designed for a specific rifle? It's a Mine' style, hollowbase 283gr. that casts at .454". I bought one of these moulds on Ebay recently for making up light loads in my 45-70, and it should work well for that. But I'm just curious as to what purpose it was really made for?

Good morning I just looked at the older Lyman list and this does not appear... so I would think it is a newer HEAVY bullet for a Colt 45. Revolver (Ruger) or the newer lever actions.
But yea a tight 45-70 rifle ought to do well. I have a Navy Arms Roller I rebarreled years ago and the grove is a real .457 and it is a joy with cast.

According to Lyman "Popularly known as the "Maxi-ball," this bullet is designed specifically for the T/C Hawken with 1/48" twist and nominal bore diameter of .45."

Wow, this is an old thread I had forgotten about. This boolit is most certainly not a maxi ball. It looks a whole lot like the #575213 that I shoot in my muskets. I ended up using it in a TC Cherokee 45 caliber, and it shoots quite well in that rifle. Never did try it in the 45-70....
