Pewter candle sticks.

Went out on a date with my beautiful bride tonight and went antique shopping. I found a bunch of pewter pieces for WAY too much money.
The last place we went was the same place I found a 94 Winchester receiver for $19 at.
I found these two candle sticks. They are approx 3/4 lb each and cost $5 for both.
They are not marked pewter, but they bend and dent easily and they make a dull thud sound.
So I either got a great deal on pewter, or I just paid $2.50 a lb for lead candle sticks! [smilie=l:
I think I will melt them and cast a couple of boolits and see what they weigh compared to lead.
My wife didn't even blink an eye when I told her I was going to melt them.
Such a great wife I have.

They very possibly are pewter. However the lack of makers icons or the name or the word pewter could be a cause for concern. If they turn out to not be pewter you are then a member of the club here of pewter buyers that got some non pewter item in a purchase. Been there and done it myself.Robert

Still probably filled with petrified dinosaur poop for weight.
You can melt that stuff out at lower temperatures than it takes to melt the pewter. You still have to cut the metal away to clean the weight goop out.

I only messed with those one time and the mess and the smell wasnt worth it for me. That filler really stinks when its cold and wait until you add some to your pot .... man good luck with that. I can get tin easier and cheaper from my scrap yard since everything in the lead bin is $0.85/lb that includes solder and 50/50 tin bars etc. I only found few pieces of pewter at my goodwill store but I already collected close to 50lbs of solder and tin bars from my scrap yard. Its a one stop shop for me since I can get anything from clean pure, WW ingots to lino and I even found small block of babbitt. I love my scrap yard I havent been there in few weeks I think I need to stop by there now that you got me talking about it.

Usually those are weighted with a plastic and yield .35 pounds of pewter.

209521Cut one open. Definitely not weighted. Hollow center with walls at 3/16 inch thick.
Held it up to a torch and it melts pretty fast. Still hopeful it's pewter.

You just destroyed a matched set of early american candlesticks for a few ounces of pewter which you can easily buy on here. They are (were) worth much more than the little pewter you will render out of them.

Don't get yourself too worked up. He's subject to saying anything. I didn't see where you mentioned any touchmarks on the candlesticks. If you have a valuable piece it will have the maker's mark (touchmark) to prove it's collector value. Unmarked is worth what the owner of the piece thinks it's worth.

Without having the piece to touch and feel, it is impossible to determine the antique value. I just hate to see vintage/antique pieces destroyed for some silly boolit pewter that can be bought on here for reasonable prices,melted from modern pewter ware.

Our history is being destroyed one piece at a time. Same with lead type.

I have not idea what your pieces are without being there to see and handle them in person.
