Wanted one of these for a bit, dad stumbled upon to one the other day and gave it to me for Christmas. Warmed it up a bit today, got it dialed in and man is it a shooter. I'm going to have to hunt up a .54 to compliment it now! I wish some of my cartridge guns would shoot this good :veryconfu

I have one in.50 it is a shooter. back down to 70 gr. and see how it shoots. if it shoots as good the lighter load will kill just as good and you get more shots to the pound of powder. I use 60 gr. n both my lyman gpr and cva mountain rifle.

I agree 70 grains makes a great hunting load for a .50 cal.

I was given the .50 cal barrel off a CVA Mountain Rifle about 25 years ago. I built a very plain cherry stocked mountain style rifle, doesn't even have a butt plate. The barrel has served me well and I couldn't ask for more as it has accounted for several deer.

I use 65 grs. of 3F GOEX and patched round ball. It is set up about 2'' high at 50yds and blows through any deer I have any business shooting at. The only one that didn't make it through was one my BIL shot. He hit a large buck at the back of the neck at about 45-50 yds. It tore the spine up and stopped in the hide on the other side but pulled a patch of hide loose about the size of a saucer. What was left of the ball was about as big around as a nickel. Needless to say the deer was DRT.

My BIL liked the rifle so he found a CVA barrel and we built another. Looks like you have a shooter don't let it get away, especially being a gift from your Father.

My first also, but in .58, I bought it back in the early eighties. I still like to shoot it now and again and still accurate out to 75-80 yards, as far as I can see these days.

Shot it a few times yesterday, was off-handing clay pigeons propped up against the `100 yard berm every shot. I think I shoot this rifle better than anything I own.

I built one from a kit back in the early 80's. My oldest son now owns it. Mine was also a shooter.

Have one also. Got in the late 70's. Have killed many deer with .490 RB, also won several shooting matches with it. Can't see the sights well anymore so it hangs on the wall. Super accurate and not fussy about the load!

Back around 1985 I had one of those, made in USA, and it had a Green Mountain barrel. It shot like that as well.
I use to take it squirrel hunting. Head shots only.
I used 60 grains of FFG if I remember correctly.

i don't think there is any need for improvement there.

I have a CVA mountain rifle that was made back in 1971 when CVA first started. It was one of a 3 rifle set I bought from a fairly famous gunsmith who made them for the man who started the company. I have trouble with the mountain rifle as it is so light weight as I am used to shooting my heavier target guns. All three of mine are 50 cal and will punch a quarter sized hole at 50 yards.

The first production MRs (.45 and .50) showed up in the 1976 catalog. The Big Bores (.54 and .58) showed up in 1979.
