Today's pewter find

I haven't had much luck scouring the local Goodwill stores for pewter. Today, however, that changed.

The six goblets weigh in at a total of 1 lb and are marked "Genuine Pewter". The tray comes in at 8 oz and is marked "Solid Pewter". So I got 1.5 lbs for $9.28 OTD. Not exactly a smoking deal, but I couldn't leave it on the shelf, either.

What's the stuff you find on old lamps for example? It's like ornamental scroll work. It has wire in it to help support. It's sort of soft like lead and melts easy. What is it made of? It has the color of pewter.

For smelting pewter in small quantities, would something like this Lyman pot do the trick? It's supposed to hold 10 lbs of lead, so by my rough calculations, that's a pot volume of 1.66 cups. My small supply of pewter, melted, would barely cover the bottom of the dutch over I use for lead smelting.

I have a small - probably 1 quart - stainless steel bowl. Fairly flat bottom. I put it on an alcohol stove, the type used for camping, to render those small lots of pewter.

If you just have to buy something, that iron pot will work fine, but any old thrift store stainless pan will work.

Duh...I'm so used to thinking of lead temps, the thought of something NOT cast iron totally escaped me. Thanks!

I keep looking for pewter in our local thrift store with no luck. People around here must be on to it's value.

Last time I went to gw there was a lady had everything that looked like pewter in her hands while on the phone looking up hallmarks......timing is everything!
