Howdy All,

New to the forum and new to 38-55. I just got a '94 Legendary Frontiersman 38-55. Now I have to start loading for it. Want to do 3f Goex and Big Lube 255gr boolits. Barrel slugs at .381. Any experience and advice would be appreciated. I have Winchester ww brass.

Thanks,

Sam :-D

The Saeco tapered bullets in 225gr , 255gr and 300gr. will cast about .382 or .381 at the base and bottom two lands. My 255gr cast .382"
Mold numbers 638, 738, 571.

I've the #738 in 255 gr. My current largest sizer is .379 with a .380 on order. You could not size these with a 381 bore as long as the loaded round would fit in your chamber. That's going to be the trick with such an over sized bore.

I could send you some to play with. For price of postage and lead. Send me a PM if interested.

I would still go with Starline brass if possible but with FFFg you should be able to slug up a cast bullet IF it is soft. All the commercial bullets I have tried for 38-55 are too hard to slug up even with BP. I shoot a cast 265 grain bullet and the 250 gran Lee bullet with good sucess using 42 grains of FFFg and they are cast of 1-30 or softeer if I need them to slug up. In the Marlin with the 381 bore I size to 382 with this load but with Winchester cases 380 is about as big as I can go. How much the bullet slugs up willl determine how accurate the load is if you can't size to fit the bore. I have an Ideal loading tool that casts a 377 bullet and I can still get decent accuracy with the bullet IF i cast from almost pure lead with just a little tin 1-40 or less. If I cast the bullet from anything with antimonny in it it won't shooot for sour owl stuff.
