My buddy has a 760 in .30/06 that was used by his granddad. It shoots 8" patterns at 100 yards with factory ammo. We changed the scope and it made no difference. Cleaning the barrel did not accomplish anything either.

Is there anything we should look for that could be causing the problem?

Thanks,

Have a good look at the crown. Check with a cotton swab if anything hangs up on the edge of the rifling. A ding in the crown can do what you describe.

Check if the barrel is loose in the receiver. I had a 742 autoloader that started spraying shots. Turned out somebody had loosened the nut that clamped the barrel to the receiver.

I seen one damaged by improper cleaning, the cleaning rod damaged the rifling at the end of the barrel. I think he cut 2" off the barrel and accuracy returned. I would bore scope it first just to be sure.

Loose barrel? Brownells has the wrench. Something's wrong because most 760s shoot goood.

There has to be a problem somewhere. My 760 shoots excellent groups with factory and even better with tailored handloads.

I would check the crown.

Search my thread i posted about remington 40x bore cleaner.

My barrel was spotless/ mirror finish after i used the 40x with a patch around a brass/nylon brush.

Other wise. Post pictures of the crown

We changed the scope and it made no difference.
* Scope mounts tight and hex screws coated with LocTite?
* Bottom scope mounts lapped with lapping bar and 600 grit?
* Scope hex screws coated with LocTite and tightened to 18 pounds with a torque wrench?
Last deer I shot with my 3x9 on the 760 went down with one shot at 230yds
