I have been reloading for quite a while but this is my first try with this old caliber. Trying for a mild recoil load in a NEF 45-70 22 in. Barrel.

Won’t be enough time for deer season in Ohio in two weeks unless all the stars align for me! But our late season in a month will be real interesting for sure.

What powder and boolit are using?

NOE 360 gr boolit PC’d and GC over some Unique. Testing out various amounts of powder.

I cast that boolit and conventionally lube it. It has shot well in several Marlins, an H&R and my new TC over Varget Unique and 2400.
Good luck!

is the gas check necessary when using unique for this bullet? I've been trying a lot of unique out but cant seem to find a mild load with it. From 11gr to 14gr it barely feels like shooting a 22 to a 9mm

A 380 gr 462-420 HB M-P on 11 gr is only into the high 900 fps in a 18" 1895 G . I don't think you're gaining much with the extra barrel length even at 14 gr Unique I doubt that you're super sonic if it is it's not over 1250 fps .

An interesting turn was that I shot the 380 gr HB and the 414 gr PB along with the 458193 @417 gr all over the same 11 gr load with the heavier bullets going 925-935 and the lighter one going 960-980 .
So food for thought .

GC may not be necessary with this powder but I got the boolits thru the generosity of a forum member and I am using powder already on hand.

As you can see in the pic I am testing 10-11-12 gr of Unique. If 11 groups well with that NOE boolit I will be satisfied IIRC mine weighs closer to 360 after pc and gc. Some have recommended using filler since the case is so large, I did not with this test. Any thoughts?

Try it with and without a filler and see what you get. I did alot of testing several yrs ago using the rcbs 325gr and a accurate 325gr clone GC, using bens red and felix. The accurate using bens red and iirc 37gr of 3031 outshot the rcbs and using felix lube. I really seen no difference using the filler in my loads. I was using a Browning Miroku. Need to revisit those tests.

I use that bullet without a gas check and conventional lube over IMR 4227 in my Marlin 1895 with good results and minimal recoil.

Not quite the 45-70 but with the taller baby brother the 458WM I found that it is quite easy to push beyond 1,600fps with a PB 450~500gn CB and have good accuracy. PC or conventional lube both work equally well. My pet load in the 458WM is with SR4759 under a 450gn from a Lee mold for measured 1,650~1,680fps. Recoil is manageable and accuracy is very good.

These large(r) bore rifles are easier to get shooting well without using GC's compared to smaller calibers in my experience. My tests are with CB's cast with molds that are plain based and not just leaving out adding a check. I have never used Unique as our LGS's don't carry it but do have a large selection of other powders to choose from.

In 45-70 & 45-75 I use black powder only as I baby my old rifles.

Tried the 360gr NOE boolit today over 10-11-12 gr Unique no filler. My Handirifle liked the 12 gr best at 50 yds a 0.75 “ CTC group of 3. Needs more testing at 100 yd but almost all my shots on deer are 50 or less.

And recoil was less than my 20 ga. Slugs out of another Handi shotgun. [emoji6]

my favorite load for the 45/70 is 31gr. of IMR 4198 with a powder coated 350 gr. NOE RF boolit, I have gotten 2 deer with it so far. both dropped where I shot them.

Jal5 .
Just for information's sake 11 gr of Unique circa 1968/9 lot out of an 1895 G @ 18" non ported was under 1000 fps with a paper patched 350 and a 405 . Which puts them down neck and neck with a 16" 45 Colts carbine .
Again information only .

I have shot over a pound of Unique with 12 and 13 grains of Unique and 300 gr cast bullets. It works fine for 50 yards. If there is no wind they work ok at 100 yards too. Be sure to avoid double charges.

If you want a bunnyfart load, try trail boss.

Check the Lyman Cast Bullet Manual and the GMDR.COM site for many listings for light loads using a wide selection of powders.
Just be sure that you understand how to avoid double charges.

The Unique loads you mentioned would be considered mild loads. I have shot thoes loads for years. If you want less recoil shoot boolits in the 300 gr class. Lyman has a 292 gr 45-70 mold.

Think I will stay with Unique for now. Might even shoot a deer next weekend with it! If so you may hear the shouts all the way to your house

For some reason, I can't get into coated bullets. Reminds me of a lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender parade gathering

Friends have commented about my rainbow bullets, complaining I don't have any pink ones yet.
I've loaded some sharp looking rounds, but have yet to pull the trigger on one.
I'm just too "old school" I guess.
I like my dutch oven biscuits well buttered, eggs bacon fried, and grits made white with cream, yellow with butter and blackend with ground pepper..

I want to see blue steel, wood stocks, and lead bullets.

Grandad never saw a pink bullet.

Whatever color these things shoot good. Didn’t see a deer though!
