Check Your Fire Extinguishers

I'm not sure everyone has heard about the massive Kidde fire extinguisher recall, but Kidde is the giant in the field and more than 40 million fire extinguishers are affected.* There are two lines of fire extinguishers affected: plastic-handled, and push button.*

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of more than 40 million Kidde disposable fire extinguishers Thursday, saying they may malfunction during an emergency.

The faulty extinguishers are equipped with plastic handles and push-buttons and can become clogged. Their nozzles also may detach with enough force "to pose an impact hazard," the CPSC said.

The recall covers 134 models of Kidde plastic-handle fire extinguishers manufactured between 1973 and August 15, 2017, including models that were recalled in 2009 and 2015. It also includes eight push-button models manufactured between 1995 and September 22, 2017.

The company has set up a web page with a couple of pages to help you determine if your fire extinguishers are included - Kidde labels their products for dozens of companies.* We just spent the evening inspecting the four we have in various places around the house, and all but one are affected.

Replacements can be applied for online.

If Kidde determines that you have an affected model, the company says it will send you a replacement within 10 to 15 business days. The new extinguishers contain metal parts instead of plastic.

Thanks for the heads up. We just lost an entire family (very close friends) to a house fire last week. You can't be too careful regarding fires.

I'll bet some bean counter insisted on a cheaper way of manufacturing them to save money. I wonder if he/she still has a job.

Thanks, one I use on my brew rig(3 high BTU propane burners... all it would take is a leak in a hose...) is in the recall!

The one in my garage was on recall. I called them this morning, I'm told a free replacement is en route.

Thanks for the heads up.

There may be other issues, but one is the recalled ones have plastic gauge bodies and are not rechargeable.
The better ones have metal gauge bodies and are rechargeable. Or were. We'll see later this week since I just found out ours is low.

I have one. In the garage and dated 1993. Good thing I never needed it with all the tinkering and welding going on. Even had it in the 79 Vette for the last couple months since they don't play well with an engine fire.

Filled out the recall online and Kidde is suppose to be sending a replacement. Easy enough. Their response said there would be further instructions on what to do with the bad one.

I got my replacement yesterday. Had to ship the old one back in the same box. They supplied the return postage. It was shipped thru fedex.

I have 2 coming. I wonder if they can take this financial hit! Then recover

Three out of four here: one in my workshop, one in my reloading room, and one beside the fireplace in the family room. Only extinguishers that weren't on recall was the one my wife keeps in the cabinet under the kitchen sink and the one in the camper (non-Kidde).

Gray wolf, thank you for bringing this to our attention.
I couldn't finish the online submission on one of our units, so I called the recall line. Less than 10 minutes later, a new one is on the way.

Is this another case of the bean counters saving just a little too much?

Was in Walmart the other day. They are still selling the ones under recall.

Having used more than my fair share, as I used to collect Coleman pressure gas table lamps (testing can get exciting), I never had a problem with the plastic handled units.

Mine is one of the models under recall but got an email that said my SN wasn't.
