Just got my first big bore revolver and first time loading for a revolver larger than 357mag. I loaded for my 45-70 with 350gr hardcast over 35grain if RL-7 and CCI large rifle to start. First 2 went off fine about 1000fps the third sounded like a squib and got stuck in the barrel about 1/3 of the way down. I know I filled each case with powder. Should I have loaded it with a pinch of dacron to keep the powder back against the primer?

Thanks

I've got one and love it. But after the fiasco on the thread: "Need load help with moderate charge of lil gun for vaquero...." that I answered to I will pass on any loads I have shot either mild to the good gosh amighty loads I will keep quite so as not to rile the locals. I will say this I have had 515 gr cast bullets to 1440 chronoed in mine and it has the shorter barrel. Low charge weight loads I use a filler with light bullets and a 350 gr bullet is light in that cartridge.
You will like it.

I have 340gr and 405gr molds so I am just looking to start there before buying another mold. 44MAG#1. Can you give me a hint of what were the better powders you used in the 340-405 grain cast range? I also have the 7.5 barrel. Thanks.

2400 is a good powder. I used a poly fill filler with the load. Reloader 7 is a good powder. With the lower charge weights us a filler. With the upper no need to. With the bruiser loads I like H322. It will with 500 to 515 gr Bullets will give you a thrill. I have reached 1340 with a 550 gr.
I really like Reloader7 with the lighter Bullets..

Let me ask the locals something. Would it be okay if I recommend an upper end factory load to the OP to try for thrills?
Or would it be a bad thing to do? I Checked with the manufacturer. Don't want to make anyone mad.

While some powders that work well in rifle barrels will be horribly inefficient in either a ‘Tender or the BFR I have found that the faster rate rifle powders I typically use in my rifles still work extremely well. It’s been ages since I read the official factory statement but given the chamber wall thickness is same as if chambered in the .450 Marlin duh that 17-4 cylinder is strong as all get out

i use 405 gr over 32.0 rel 7 in my BFR and both marlins. works great.

I have pushed 405s up to 1750 in mine with a heavy charge of IMR4227. I haven't really played with the lighter loads, so I couldn't comment on those.

My favorite powder when I had mine was 5744 and that used up quite a bit of space and didn't beat your hand
