Went pawn shopping today. Saw a beautiful 1894 chambered in .38 special. Case colored with octagonal barrel and perfect wood. I think the serial number put it at a 1998 manufacture. They were asking $800.00. No way I'm buying it for that kind of money, but, is it worth that much?

This sounds like one of the 1894CBC models !

They made these in 38 Special and 45 Long Colt !

They were supposed to be slicked up and ready for Cowby Competition shoots !

The gun should be CC as you said with a 20" octagon barrel and full length mag ! The barrel should also say 38 Special and nothing about 357 MAG ! Also on top of the action there should be a roll stamp that says "Marlin Safety" just like the old ones had !

My Blue Book says MSR was $986 !

These rifles were expensive when they first came out ! Like $200 more then the standerd CB's !

I have often wished I picked one up in 45 Long Colt

The seriel number on this rifle started with 98 correct ?

If so it was made in 2002 , thats supposedly the first year for production of the 1894CBC !

They only made these rifles for about 4 years I think ! Never have heard what final production numbers were !

Yes, they are recent. Yes, they were expensive.

Is it worth it? You can get a '73 for about that price and not have the headaches associated with a Marlin.

6pt,

This gun is as you mention. It is a CBC with Marlin Safety on top and the first 3 digits of the serial number are 982*****. The action was like my OLD 336....smooth. Are these things fussy about the ammo you use?

This thing was Marlin's attempt to make a competition ready leveraction for the SASS !

I think they will digest most anything EXCEPT wadcutters !

This gun was a first year production for an 1894CBC in 2002 !

I would think if this rifle is at a pawn shop and they have it marked at $800 you can most likely get it closer to $700 for cash !

But thats just a thought on my part [smilie=1:

I bought one in December for $450 from my local Cowboy Gunsmith. Sweet little rifle and works well with Snakebiite BigLube Boolits with a 1.525" OAL.
