Nice Score! I'm sitting on a pretty good pile of weights but it looks like it will be after hunting season before any smelting gets done.

I know that procrastination thing... I have 3 3/4 full buckets of WW to sort... and I hand sort/use a magnet so each one gets tested so no zinc in my smelt!

I hand sort all of my weights too! I've sorted so many that I seem to have developed a "radar" for zinc! I pick up each weight for a quick visual check and drop any suspect weight into a pile to test with my trusty pair of dykes. Using this method, I seldom find any "floaters" in my smelting pot. I'll have a few buddies over after hunting season for a smelting "marathon" smelting session when its nice and cool.

My total hoard is about 150 pounds, with one source for free WW, another for 50 cents a pound.

Waiting for the tire change season to wind down before I go get what should be a five gallon bucket of mixed weights (last time got 60 pounds out of a bucket). The 50-cent a pound is from the recyclers, got some steel to throw away and while he's not taking anymore steel he let's me dump it if I'm buying lead.

This has already been sorted but I will need to do it again for sure.
There aren’t a lot of casters in my neck of the woods, and I have not had difficulties procuring casting materials. I find the whole process to be very enjoyable and relaxing, from smelt to target. I learned a great deal from this sight, and have developed some good friendships among shooters in my area. The most important friendship I’ve developed is with my dad, another lifelong shooter.

That sounds like my way of sorting a pail of weights, hand check each one. Right now I have 5 1/2 full and over flowing pails waiting to be smelted and another 2 pails 3/4 full of unsorted weights sitting there. Ill health is my excuse for not melting any of this pile, and then there is my `pile of pewter` to be addressed.Robert

My system may be a little unorthodox,
some you can tell 100% by looking
If not 100% sure I touch an end to a magnet,
if it doesn't stick I tap the magnet with it,
if it doesn't "ring/tinny sound I call it lead,
If I'm even a little unsure, I nip it with my side cutters.
