I recently aquired 3lbs of W296 at a very reasonable price and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this powder with CB. From what I've read its good for the hornet and 44mag with stiff loads and really only works well with full cases. I load a RB8x58r a VZ33 8x57 and a 38-303 low wall.

Most of the time, this powder is used with smaller capacity cartridges. It can be used in the medium capacity ones, but little data is available and it would have a very narrow range where it would be usefull and safe. I would suggest you use another powder for these cartridges.

I have heard reports of very bad things happening with low volume loads of H110/WW296 in high volume cases and most published data contains warning about reduced loads. I would pick another powder for those cartridges and get something to use the powder in.

All I have seen 296 used with is full power loads... with little or no air space and compressed loads. I use it alot in 41 mag loads... but never in reduced loads. I would contact Winchester/ Olins before I tried that one.

Do NOT use it in those bottleneck cases. H110 and 296 are very application specific, for use in low volume cases at max velocity with little or no air space. It's much too fast to be used in bottleneck rifle cases (except the Hornet of course, but that's a little different). Reduced loads of this powder do not work well and can be dangerous.

296 is a great powder but it's use is very specific!

357,41 and 44 magnum full house only! Winchesters lit states to use it as listed in the reloading information and to not use any reduced loads

I have used this in 30-30 Contender with good results.

You probably have a use for it but if not PM me a price, payday I may have some extra cash?

The only cartridge I shoot that may fit the bill is a browning mod58 32-20.
Thanks for all the good advice. Has anyone used 296 in a 32-20.

Both Hornady and Sierra show some 296 loads for the 32-20 however they all use .308 J bullets no cast info but at least it's a place to start?

I have used both H110 and 296 in 30 carbine loads with lead bullets (GC and PB ones) with excellet results. With water quenched WW I used 296 and the 120 gr Lee Round nosed GC to make loads that shot at about 1900 FPS in several carbines that was accurate as well.

Here is a load from Rifle Issue # 128.
Rifle used Marlin 94CL
100gr Speer .312dia. Bullet
Remington case, Federal 210M Primer
Winchester W-296 9.0gr
1457fps.

**********************WARNING PLUS P LOAD*********************
Rifle Issue #224
Rifle used Browning Model 53 with 22" barrel
Starline brass, Remington 7 1/2 primer, Temp during testing 103 degrees
100gr Speer JHP
Winchester W-296 13.5gr

That should give you some Idea. That is a bigger spread than I would have thought.

Speer's number 10 manual shows loads for the 10" contender in the pistol section!

.308 110 Grain Bullet
16.0 grains WW 296 as a start load, magnum primer 18.0 grain max...1778 FPS

.308 130 Grain Bullet
15.5 grains WW 296 as a start load, magnum primer 17.5 max load...1664 FPS

.308 150 Grain Bullet
15.5 grains WW 296 as a start load, magnum primer 17.5 max load...1471 FPS

.308 165 Grain Bullet
14.5 grain WW 296 as a start load, magnum primer 16.5 max load....1432 FPS

I always thought it odd that the load data for the 130 grain bullet was the same as the 150 grainer's , that's no typo, but as we're supposed to start low and work up....

All I can tell you is I bought my mom a Super 14 in 30-30 back in the mid 80's. It had a Williams Peep sight on it and she was planning on silly wet shooting.

Took it to the range when we visited and tried out some loads with 296. Some of the local silly wet guys were practising.

I was loading some 150gr (?) match sierra's, at 50 yards it was A. Punching holes in the Pig they had set up to practise on ( we stopped @ second shot they got bummed!) and B. from a sand bag it simply put all the bullets in one hole! They had not seen any 14" barrels for the Contender so I had a group of Volenteers helping me shoot it.

Mom never did shoot it well and got an offer she couldn't refuse for it so everyone was happy.

I didn't get another Contender in my life until last year and I now have another 14" 30-30 to play with.

Hope the load info helps out.

These loads for the 30-30 and 308 look like they could be sucessfully transferred to the 8mm to me. 14.5 to18grs in a 308 don't sound like casefilling loads. I have been useing ADI 2207 from 15-28grs in my RB8x58r and while 296 is somewhat faster I thought there would probably be a useable load in the 15-25 range. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks for the help, its much appreciated.

Before anyone points out my rediculous mistake. I'VE SEEN IT. The loads are for 30-30 with 308 pills. I see magnum primmers are recommended which indicates that 296 must be a bit hard to light off properly. I think I must have been reading what I hoped to see.

This is a load I use in my Ruger Buckeye-a real stout pistol.
