ESPC coverage

Attached is a picture of what I get when using a harbor freight pc gun. I get half good bullets and half where the powder just doesn't want to stick to the sides of the bullet. I am spraying with no diffuser at the end of the gun and attempting to get as close as possible on all sides. Do I need a better ground? I've used smokes and eastwood powders with same result.

Probably. Could need more spacing between them also.

mine did the same which is one reason went to tumble coating with ASBBs.

I seem to have to spray a really heavy amount of powder to get coverage and then have to deal with a 'shoulder' building up around the base of the bullet

never did solve this to my satisfaction other than change coating methods

Allow at LEAST 3/4" inch between all boolits you put on trays. That allows all the charged powder to get down in the "canyons".

If you have the wire hooked to the foil, you cannot improve the ground!!!!!! Remember you dealing with anywhere between 10-15K volts of static electricity and the ground WILL be there!!!!
This is not like low voltages you may be used to.

You did not provide us with the brand of gun you are using. That would really help diagnosing your problems.

In the MANY years I have been doing ESPC, I have never ignited powder with the 2 guns I use.

It is a harbor freight gun. I did clip to the foil. I will try spacing them out more the next time.

I too have caught some bullets on fire with the spark from my HF gun.
And I had a similar problem with coverage when I forgot to clean my Sizing Die and it had a slight film of lube on the boolits.
I cast, then dry size, then PC then Resize again, sometimes with Spray on Silicone lube,if I decide to size them smaller than their initial sizing .
IE cast a .314 slug, size it to .312, then PC them, but decide to take them down to .309 for my 30 cals.

You can place the bullets on something like a nut to raise them up which with me helps getting a even coat top to bottom.

gobbles; I'm betting there was a little lube residue in the sizing die. GpNo these were not sized yet. I had the tip of the gun almost on the foil trying to get close to the side of a bullet and pulled the trigger which ignited the powder.

Space them 1" apart and hold gun at 45 deg. Rotate tray or move around it. If you get them too close, the electrostatic field shields the spray, just normal. If you see bad spots, just recoat before cooking. Just takes a little practice.

Space between the bullets is required to get the sides of the bullets coated. Have coated thousands of bullets with the spray gun.
