So I have the brass.....been trying to sell some of it to no avail, which I get.....there aren't that many of them out there. I may or may not have dies....I'd have to look. .308 bullets are not hard to come by.... So, per the advice of one my most untrusted friends, "just buy a rifle to shoot it in", I seemingly might be in the market for a Model 8 in .30 Remington. I'll admit...prior to 'inheriting' the brass, I didn't know much about it, but I've since been educated. It's ugly, it's old.....and it's really dang cool, and I think I might now want one. So if you're in the market to get rid of a Model 8/81 in 30 Rem...shoot me a PM with details. If it works out, I can then add you to my list of untrusted friends. :)

I noted with interest your offer of the brass for sale. I already have my lifetime supply but will pass on your info to a fellow I know.

My 30 Rems are a couple of the pumps -- a m14 carbine and a 141 rifle. I would recommend the pump: for one thing you can use light loads (I shoot mostly a 32/20 level load) that might not work the action of the m8; and the pumps are sleek looking (unlike the 8!)

I appreciate it earl! And I absolutely get what you're saying about the 14/141, but I have a soft spot for old, ugly rifles. Thus my current dilemma. I really just wanted to unload the brass, and avoid the project, but now I'm not so sure..... It's a sickness, I know. :)

A M 14 carbine is one of my favorite just kick around guns period. It is just unreal how slick that little rifle is.
I wouldn't give up on selling that brass just yet, anybody with a 25 or 32 can also use it, but he, any excuse for another rifle is as good as any. lol

I have a model 8 in 30 Rem and another in 25 Rem.
They are great fun to shoot. I have seen 30 brass on the shelves of a couple gun shops lately at "normal" caliber prices!
Good to see this old caliber supported
Now, if they made affordable 32rimfire ammo

Get the gun because: John Browning designed it
TX Ranger Frank Hammer used it
the FBI used them
load it with a stripper clip {if you can find one}
you can collect all 4 calibers!
your friends will think its some kind of 30-30 machine gun
and last reason- its FUGLY

I have a Model 8 in .25 Rem- very accurate and easy on the shoulder. Also had a Model 8 in .32 Rem, now sold. Its problem, for me anyway, was that it had the factory crescent buttplate. Recoil was uncomfortable, due to the crescent buttplate. Suggest avoiding any rifle with one of these without shooting it first to see how the recoil affects you.
Also have a Model 141 pump in .30 Rem. Am selling it due to eye issue. If you need .30 Rem dies I have a Redding set in really nice shape.
Both the auto and pump are fun to shoot and gather some attention on the range. Most people have no idea what they are.

I always wanted one in either .30 or .35 Remington but the ones I used to see at Gun shows were in pretty bad shape and had a huge price on them. I finally gave up because local was all we had back then and the computer/internet sales were way in the future. Good luck on finding what you want. james

Don't forget, Remington made a bolt gun in .3 Remington also, based on the 1917 action.

They sure did called it a model 30 and later a slightly modified called a 720 and a later much modified called a 725. I had one until my grandson took a shine to it. It is now in his possession. It was a great shooter and smooth as glass. It had the 22" carbine barrel on it and a featherweight snobble forend tip. james

IF you want a 30 or 32 Rem (the brass will work for either/both), I know where there are at least 2 Mdl 14/141 rifles. They ain't ugly, but man, I LOVE my Mdl 14 in 35 Rem. IF I could get a 30/32 at a decent price, I would have already purchased some of your brass! PM me if interested in a Mdl 14/141

The M8 in .35 and the M8& M81 in .35 & .300 Savage have some kick on the bench with the steel buttplates. They are RECOIL operated by golly.

I simply refused to believe that a Mdl 81 in 300 Savage could kick you as hard as everyone said it did. But by damn it does! I didn't like it. Traded it off.

Texas? My first deer rifle is the old #8, 35cal in picture. I was 12yrs old and probably was only
100lbs soaking wet. I admit it moved me around a little back then. I was known on the mountain
as the skinny little guy with the machine gun. Never was worried about the recoil but once when
fine tuning the sights one summer I had a empty bounce off the barn and go down my shirt. That's
when I invented the Boot Scooten Boogie. I think someone down your way claimed credit for that
too.

35 doesn't kick like the 300 does though. lol

The thing kicks 3 times, once backwards and twice forwards! I saw an interesting U-tube video of one firing in slow motion, bolt and barrel slide back during recoil, with the bolt held in the rearward position, then the barrel slams forward which then releases the bolt to strip a cartridge from the magazine, then it slams forward to lock up with the barrel extension. It's really noticeable when you shoot reduced loads, and everything slows down.

I could use 100 30 Remington cases, if the price was right. I saw your ad but was not interest at your listed price.

oscarflytyer,

Wishing that you had called me before you traded it off. = I've looked for a Model 8 (YEP there were a FEW Model 8s made at the end of the run.) or Model 81 in .300SAV (in serviceable condition) for 5+ years.
(I have a George F. Cake extended police-service magazine "squirreled away" to fit that rifle.)

MOST of the people who complain about the Remington's "kick" are trying to turn it into a .300 Win Mag, imVho.
(Fwiw, my S-A War .30-40 "clone" 180 grain GCCB hunting load is a great KILLER but not much of a "kicker", as my 60" tall/100# lady shoots my circa 1954 Model 760 quite well, thanks.)

Now this is a thread I can love.
I started my love affair with the 30 Rem about 20 years ago. I bought a model 14R that was pitted out for the first 2 inches of barrel. Oddly enough I put 10 rounds into 2 inches at 100 yards with Iron sights. Time to go hunting. This one was made in 1922 so in 2002 I took it deer hunting. Got a nice forked horn at 15 yards on opening day. Hope I'm still putting venison on the table at 80 years old.
Then I had to get the rest of the series so I started looking and found a 25, 32 and 35 in the Model 14. Then I needed to have the Model 8's, I have so far found (2) 30's, a 25 and a 32. I'm still looking for a shooter in 35.
I did stumble across a Model 30 Express in 30 Rem. Beautiful and a sub 1" shooter. The shop had no idea what they had.

I got lucky one day when Chub Eastman was assigned an article on the 35 remington. He knew I loved the 35 so he asked if we could use my contender and my model 14. I worked up the load data ( with some newer powders) and Chub wrote the article. He was kind enough to picture me and my model 14 in the article. If I remember correctly it was a 2005 Guns and Ammo.
Can't hardly wait until 2022 so I can take that first Model 14 out hunting on it's 100th Birthday.
Long live the 30 Rem and the whole family.

Joe

I recommend the slide action, too. For reasons stated above. Plus that brass in the grass doesn't sound that great to me.

Tex - been gone awhile. and I was shooting the Pet Load in it. Not hot rodding at all. Loved the rifle itself, and the caliber. But all was lost once I pulled the trigger!

Have you looked at gunsinternational .com? they have one listed. just saw it there today. Put in your make and model in the search and it should show you whats forsale. I'm not associated in any way with the wed site or the gun. Just "helping" out:)
