I would look at the track record of the customer service of both companies and the resale value of the units.

I would look at 'ease of use', position and space on the bench it requires, compare the height, width, footprint and especially the mould rests and visualize what would fit your physical and shop needs. Lyman has the PID unit right in your face and you can see it well, where the RCBS unit has the PID over around on the right rear of the unit...me?, I want to see the readout but that's just me. If I wanted to change the temperature for some reason, I would reach up and pushbutton the Lyman and with the RCBS I'd have to get up and reach around the unit...I don't think I'd be able to just grab the unit, full of lead and spin it on the bench to access the PID. That detail alone sells the Lyman to me.

Resale value? It's a tool, something I purchase for a lifetime of use. If my kids want to resale it after I'm gone...that's on them.

I like the the Mag25.I have only seen photo's of the RCBS.They are both made in China I suspect.I know the Mag25 is.I have had excellent customer service from both Lyman and RCBS.I like the PID location on the Lyman.

I have the Mag25 and love it. I have never used the RCBS.

I just purchased a Mag25 and love it. Had to flip the mold guide over to fit my NOE's but it works very well. I have no experience with the RCBS.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171019/8c6dcf3cdd780c9aad655f156682fff0.jpg

RCBS has a 2 year warranty. Anyone know what the Lyman pot is?

Ive had both and have 2 pro melts today. Both are good pots but ive just had my fill of dealing with lyman over warrantee bs. Even if the rcbs pot had only a 2 day warrantee id about bet my house that 10 years down the line if you have problems there at least going to send you parts for free to get it going again. Good luck with lyman.

Nonexistent, I wish anyone luck who tried to use Lyman's warranty service.

Too be fair, They did replace my mag 25 when it did not work correctly. They were slow about it, but they did do it.

I just used Lyman warranty service on a digital thermometer. Two days after a phone call I had a replacement in hand.I determined that the thermocouple was the problem on the bad item by cross checking with the good item and will be able to repair the original.

I was taught from a young man to "purchase a product not a warranty".

Problem is that no-one appears to have one of the new RCBS units yet so it's impossible to compare them.

Just called RCBS for some parts for a set of 1978 vintage dies. Asked them if they had a due date for the ProMelt 2 and they said it wont be till at least January.

While it took Lyman a while to identify that the real problem was my Lyman dial thermometer and not my Lyman 25, support did exist, and they did calibrate my pot when I sent it back. It cost me shipping one-way. So, support does exist. No, not RCBS quality support, but RCBS has not always been so kind to their older electronics products, either.

In the end I got a new Lyman dial thermometer (the one on the right, the only accurate one), and didn't have to send the old one back.

I'd almost bet that if we all put our dial thermometers in the same pot, only...maybe...possibly...3 might read the same temp.!

Many many thanks to SSGOldfart for getting me into a PID !

on the lyman, does that mold guide have the ability to be lifted closer to the pour spout and lowered away from it if need be??-Travis

The Lyman mold guide can be raised and lowered and moved from side to side. The sideways movement is actually pivoting but it allows precise alinement with the spout. The mold guide works with Lyman,Ideal,RCBS,Lachmiller, and Saeco molds.
