Everything I read says that wad cutters start getting unstable after about 50 yards.
The 311440 sure does look like a wad cutter.
Why is it any more stable at distance . . . or is it?

My personal belief which has not been deeply tested is that it becomes unstable when it drops under 700 fps. It just starts out a lot faster than that. I know from a 30-30 contender 14" it is on target at 100 yards.

Have you hunted with it out of the Contender?

They fly pretty stinking good out to at least 265 yards,,,,,,

I've not chronographed the load but a case full of WC860 in the .308 seems to do the trick.

No, I shot two whitetails with it and the 308. One was drt, the other went 75 yards. No recovery of the bullet in either case.

Real world testing and language, priceless!! Todd/3leg

I forgot that i had shot them plain based [noe pb311440] out of the Badger30 at what must be around 500 fps. Round holes in the 25 yard target. Another myth busted.

I don't think that's a "myth busted" MT Gianni.

The short stubby pistol WCs shot in 18 3/8" twist barrels are not very stable past 50 yards and many times make slightly oblong holes at 50 yards. The much longer .30 caliber 311440 will be shot in 10 twists mostly and a 12" twist sometimes out of M94s and .308Ws with such. Also it is a TC nose and is not a true WC thus it will be stable when shot at a very low velocity as you point out even with a slower twist if your Badger has one. Then too, depending on the twist of your Badger, stability at short range does not always mean stability "at distance".
