Friend just pointed out to me all the off coloured grey material on the hill side at the end of our trap range ws shot. (Duh). I now have a huge supply of lead available to me in the form of lead shot. I have heard it contains arsenic and is quite hard, which would be good. Is this true? Better yet does anyone know what the alloy is?

Plain old chilled shot is almost pure lead as far as I know, magnum shot has arsenic and antimony.

Thanks Bill, I can use the lead two ways. Mix it with wheelweights and some solder and also try to make mushroom bullets using harder metal as a base which is my next project.

Chilled shot has 3% or 4% antimony; Magnum shot has 6% to 7% antimony and a trace of arsenic.

In your opinion would that make it soft, hard or 'tween alloy?

Well, it would be harder than wheelweights, softer than linotype. Might approximate Lyman #2 or Taracorp metal. I would add a little tin. Felix and some others here are far more qualified than I to expound on this subject.
