I plan to start casting for my 35 Rem. for the main purpose of hunting with cast( Thanks guys you really hooked me) I slugged the barrel last nigh and its .349 x .3575 (I guess thats about normal?) I was looking for moulds this morning and seems the Lyman 200 gr RN would work OK? Or would a FN be better for medium build whitetails ? (again no hunting experience with cast) And as for speed can the 35 be EASILY loaded to factory vel. and still have fine accuracy like the 32 special can ? Its a Rem 600. with 1:16 twist

Thanks,Tim

IMO, you can't beat the RCBS 35-200-FN. The nose fits better and is a little larger in diameter than Lyman's 358315 in my old Marlin./beagle

+1 to what beagle said. The RCBS 200 grain FP is an excellent bullet in the .35 Remington. Yes, factory ballistics can be easily matched with cast. My favorite load is the RCBS 200 grains FP over 38.0 grains of H335 for a little over 2100 fps.

I like the RCBS 35-200 with 10gr of Unique in my contender for plinking.

The lee 158gr RF is a good one too! I like it in my 360 DW, havn't tried it in the 35 rem yet.

Another one for the RCBS 35-200-FN from one who has tried both it and the Lyman in the .35 Rem. Much more accurate and much better for hunting.

either of these would be good candidates

180gr Flat point GC, and the 207gr Tycer, a plain base flat point.

personally I'd use the bullet with the biggest meplat you can find.

Even if it's the 158gr Lee RF.

I'd trade wt for meplat, and not use the RN for hunting white tail.

I used the above 180gr with my 360 DW rifle to take a deer last year. I was quite impressed with the wound channel from the meplat.

Keep your alloy on the soft side for hunting, I used to hard and it blowed up under the skin. Use like 1/2 pure and 1/2 WW. Hope this helps, Joe

An alloy softer than Lyman#2 (15BHN) is best for hunting. I've used the 358315 with and without the round nose. I cut the tip off with a dremel tool. The flat nose SEEMS to hit them harder. The round nose does not expand nearly as much, but DOES penetrate more. I've used straight ACWW,WDWW, Lyman#2 and linotype. Velocities were close to 2000 fps. Accuracy is the MOST important thing when hunting. A poor hit will not get the deer. A nail thru the heart will still kill though.

The above is a small ring Mauser (1894 Brazilian) chambered 35 Remington I built. It's a fine shooting rifle. The RCBS 200 gr slug is a fine one according to the many posts I've ever seen refering to it. I have the 200gr Saeco design.

These are some 'fun' loads I threw together. I'm sure the bottom load using a PB slug instead of the 358156 with the GC would do as well. Mine has a 16" twist also. It doesn't really seem to be very picky about loads.

It appears to me that surp WC846 is THE powder for the 35 Rem :-) I shot these after I had been working up loads. WC846 kind of stood out from some others I'd been testing, althought several of the other powders looked pretty good too. Just that WC846 shaded them every time.

The more WC846 I put in the case, the faster it went (kind of expected), but best of all it shot tighter groups. I reached 41.0grs which was a full case with the boolit just pressing on it a scant bit. The above 4 groups were loaded special. My normal routine is visual boolit inspection, sizing in a Lyman 450, and thrown powder charges.

These 4 used scaled boolits cast of 2 lino-1WW. They were lubed & GC seated in a Ho-Made .360" die, and were sized .359" in a Lee push through type die. The slugs all weighed 202 gr +/- 0.2gr for a 0.4gr spread. All powder charges were scaled. The rifle does have a Timney trigger but the sights are iron. A Williams rear apurture and up front:

I think it's a Remington cast off I found in my 'Bag-o-sights' :-)

BTW, if you have or can glom onto some AA2200 it's another one that was doing really well. It's a bit faster then WC846, showing 2200 fps with 36.0grs, but it was showing more pressure so I topped out the AA2200 in my load data @ that 36.0gr charge.

Tim, I don't think that 600 will ever shoot worth a darn so in order to save you some embarrassment, I would be happy to give you a couple hundred bucks that you could put toward a cast bullet rifle [smilie=1:

I'm a 35 Rem fan and would like someday to find the little Rem to add to the rifles I have. Buckshot, that is a very nice looking rifle!

Thats a nice little rifle Buckshot ,Did you have to correct any feeding issues with it or did it feed proper from the start? Also thanks for the loading Info. It will be a help for sure.
Ranchdog thanks for the "Generous" Offer BUT I think I'll hold onto this one as its the rifle I shot my first deer with 28 yrs ago.Besides I was told if I ever sold it off I would be thrown kicking and screaming from the family tree! One rule we have is family hand me down guns stay in the family! I hope someday you run across one as they are fairly rare in that caliber,I have only ever see one other for sale and was priced outrageously. thanks all for the help.

I use the Lyman 200gr plain base 358430 in my Remington mod.14. I have killed a couple of deer with 20-1 mix going a little over 1400fps. I made a hardened die to be able to accurately file a flat point on them. Ranges were between 50 and 100 yards, and the deer took a few steps and fell over. All were chest shots with complete penetration, so bullet performance is just a guess. The exit holes were larger than entrance holes but not by much. The 35 Rem is a great cast bullet cartridge.

RuShooter, back in the '70's, when I first started experimenting with some cast bullets for my leverguns, I acquired the Lyman 204 gr gascheck mold, and used it in my uncle's 35 Rem. It worked in an acceptable fashion, but I never experimented with it much Much later on, after I had obtained a 35 of my own, I bought the RCBS 200 Grain mold. I agree with everyone who has written about the latter boolet this morning. I never use the Lyman these days. By the way, Buckshot--that's one fine looking 35 you made up for yourself. I'm a lefty and mostly use leverguns, but that bolt action 35 of yours is something any 35 shooter could really appreciate.
