Team.

Who is shooting GC bullets without GC's?

What are the results like at lower velocity eg; 1000fps? Comparable to PB?

Jeff, I have done some of my best shooting without the GC at 22LR speeds in my 03A3 and k31 I mainly used the Lee 155 and 185 both at.311 and using 6-7.5 grs of either bullseye or W231. I have bettered or matched higher vel. loads at 100 yds . 10 rd groups will routinely run in the sub 2 moa range with open issued sights. They shoot OK at 200 also but you start to get some vertical stringing. Very pleasant and economical loads to practice with.

Some do, some don't! It depends on how the boolit matches your rate of twist with the loss of a drive band.
Only you can see what happens with the boolit and gun you have.

Black Powder Cartridge Rifle shooters can't use gas checks in registered NRA matches and only BLACK POWDER! The 10 ring at 1000 yards is 20" diameter and it's not unusual for some shooters to 'plop' many of their shots inside that diameter in the Creedmoor match we shoot....if that tells you anything! Most bullets have at least four lube grooves and velocities run 1240 to 1400 fps depending on the load and bullet being used!!

I've used then sans GC in 25, 7mm, 30 and 35 rifles. I was in the 1K-1250 fps or so range and using them for plinking ammo up to 75 yards or so. No big success or failure. At the time I just didn't have any GC's IIRC, or access to them. (This was pre-internet when you had to mail a card off to get a catalog and wait weeks for the turn around) If you're really interested you can find the mould that works best for you and have the GC area milled of or reamed out. A PB sould give better results, all things being equal, than the GC shank.

I've been working up loads for a couple of .303's and have been using PB bullets and gas check style both with and without gas checks.

The PB bullet is a 215 gr. from a home made mould and the gas check style is a Lyman 314299 lapped and Beagled to 0.315" body & 0.305" nose.

The velocities according to the reloading manual should be 1600 + FPS (not chronographed) so a little higher than you are looking at.

I have had good success with a Lyman 314299 lapped and Beagled to 0.315"/0.305" without gas check but using COW filler.

Without the filler groups open up. With filler groups are as good as with gas check.

The 314299 has given more consistent results than the PB bullet but some loads with both have given good results.

I know the filler issue always results in debate but so far I have had good success and no problems. PSB would likely be a better choice but one of the reasons I am using filler is due to lack of reloading supplies locally. COW is available locally, gas checks and PSB are not.

So far best groups have been about 1 1/2" ay 50 yards with issue sights on a No. 5.

I have several loads of checked cast boolit without check attached
30-30 ---170gr Lee 7.0 gr unique----1140 f/s
150gr Lee 6.0 gr unique----1100 f/s
130gr Lee 4.5 gr unique----1020 f/s
130gr Lee 3.5 gr red dot----970 f/s
All loads in a Marlin mod 30as and give 1 to 1 1/2 '' @ 50yds
8x57mm---175gr Lee 7.5 gr---unique--- did not crony but got 1 1/2 '' from my Yugo @ 50yds None of the loads gave me any leading. Papa smurf

I've shot them out of my .357 for years. One day I may break bown and buy a box to see what all of the fuss is about...

In .22's with my 58 grain RCBS they shoot as good without them as they do with them. I've about decided gas checks a waste of money.

Doesn't the price scare the heck out of you? I am making all of my revolver boolits PB now.

OK. Seems it is a 'try and see' scenario. That I shall do.

Just hoping to sell my 311008 and 311316 and get a .314 GC mould from CBE to replace both. The Lymans through a bit small for my rifles.
