Early yesterday afternoon a coworker asked my wife if I and her wanted to go to a local newer Indian casino about an hour away. Now I'm no gambler and actually my wife tells people to stay away from me in a casino as I'm bad luck. Well now here's what happened, I started out with $250, but I had an extra $10 in my pocket I used that ten bucks to build a small stake, I ended with the 250 and won $523 from my original ten dollar investment. Needless to say I was at one of the local gunshops at opening time this morning to pick up a much needed 625 mountain gun that I had my eye on. Cash out the door brand new 599.99, how's that for good luck!
First time I ever one a gun.

I've never won anything, either. Mebbe 'cause I never bet anything. But, I have been the beneficiary of some luck.

In the '90s, I took the wife to Reno for a weekend. I wanted to attend the American Custom Gunmaker's Guild show and she wanted to blow some bux on the tables. We stay at the show hotel and I attend the show and she goes downstairs, where she meets up with a very nice guy, who teaches her to play Keno. Wins on the first try, comes up to the show, hands me $400 and says "hold onto this." Paid for the trip.

The very nice guy was Doug Turnbull.

One cool story, Mark!

I'm not much for gambling, either--so I haven't been able to re-invest the proceeds of a Vegas or Laughlin trip into a new gun. About the closest I can get to that--the sis-in-law (GREAT lady) lands here about 4X/year, and loves to hit the tables at the Indian casinos in Banning and Indio. About a year ago, I got assigned to escort her and Marie as "designated driver" while the two of them dissipated on table games and mixed drinks. Those two can well and truly carry on with the best of them, if so minded.

They go off to play live table blackjack, I nose around and find a 25 cent draw poker machine. These devices are like a Keno race, in that it takes a while to lose a reasonable amount of money. I figured $40 would last a little while, then I would adjourn to the camper shell and crash on the futon therein until The Weird Sisters ran outta money.

Au contraire, mon amis--au contraire.

When you're winning--gambling is fun. I didn't hit anything huge, but steadily did well for about 90 minutes and was about $275 to the good on top of the start-up finances. It's getting on to about 11 P.M., and I figured it best to NOT be still seated in view of the ladies when they rolled by--I wasn't eager to share my windfall, only to see it get used for some household gewgaw instead of a more meaningful and substantial investment (primers, powder, casting metal).

I kept an eye peeled for the oncoming spoilsports, but nay did they approach. I kept playing, and another hour elapses minus womenfolk. Hmmmm, says I. By this time, I'm thinking the girls might be doing better than usual. 2-1/2 hours, and no moaning and keening about having me buy dinner for two poverty-stricken players taken advantage of by Native American gaming schemes and scams. I'm up $400 or so, and can see no reason to not continue.

So, I do. The winning slows a bit, but by the time 2 A.M. rolls around I'm almost $500 to the good. Right about that time, I see the heads of Marie and SIL pop up into view in the table area. They are jaw-jacking with the dealer, so I see it is time to BUST A MOVE. I punch the payout button and cash out at the cage, then hustle myself out to the truck and crawl in back and assume Operation Bored Husband.

I'm actually dozed off when the girls pound on the camper shell windows a few minutes later. "HEY, LET'S GO EAT!" OK with me.

Those two women won close to $2000 between them! Small wonder I never saw them or heard from them. Both of them gave me $100 apiece for "being so sweet" while they played, and asked how I did. "Aaaaaah, played for a while, had fun, and crashed." We chowed down, and headed for home.

There was sufficient cash for a new Smith 625, and don't think for a minute that I didn't give THAT some mind-time. Marie can smell a new gun from 50 paces, though--and my preference was to keep the whole winnings bit on the down-low. A new gun would be a little loud. I settled on powder and primers with the vigor the girls gave me, and my winnings got plowed into the New Boat For CZ in CA Slush Fund (L.L.C.), which matured on Feb. 8, 2008.

Marie will skin me when she reads this.

Well guys if it's of any help I've never won anything before either. Funny thing was, I usually just have a couple of cold ones, play a little video poker and watch my wife play the slots, she will win 5 or 600 bucks once in a while and put it back in. Not me I cashed it right out and saw that new shootin' iron on the hip right there. Probably won't happen again. I'm pretty new on this sight, I'll tell you what I've really enjoy being a member.
Thanks to all.

Gambling is legal in Montana, and there are casinos everywhere you look. Not high stakes as in Vegas, but live Keno, poker, and many video gaming machines. Most people just keep putting the winnings back in the machine. It's a smart player that can quit when he's ahead.

You said it true, Ed. In a live table game the opinion has always been "look around. If you don't see the sucker, it's you." Gianni

In March 2006 I too was a designated driver, with only $120 in my pocket. Around 11:00 PM while escorting my SIL, BIL and sister, I and they stopped at Fitzgerals in Blackhawk, CO. They went to find free drinks and an open machine, I sat at a quarter progressive and said, why not I'll put a twenty and if I lose I'll move on to another Casino that has hotdogs and Diet Coke. Long story short that $20 with three max bet roll of the reels became $3648. After receiving my winnings and having my excited family members around me helping me spend my winnings and trying to call my wife to tell her of my good luck, decided right there and then that I would buy a Handi-Rifle in 45-70 w/scope and since I felt generous I told my BIL that I would buy him a Remington 700 30-06 that a freind was selling. Breakfast was on me at 3:30AM and my wife changed out all the accessories in our four bathrooms and we paid for the books and part tuition for my daughter at CU-Boulder. Now My Confession- there was $350 remaining and I bought powder from Gi-Brass! there MEA CULPA. On other ocassions I have won $5400, $2500 and $3500 (all declared and making no difference in taxes, contrary to what people were telling me)

i only won one thing in my life and it was a duzzy. The second linebaugh seminar i was at i won the main rafle. I bout 5 tickets for 20 bucks and won a 4 5/8s 500 linebaugh. I had two allready. As a matter of fact had just picked up my new one that day. My buddy wanted it real bad so we made a trade and i ended up with three new 4 inch N frames and he paid for a hog hunt for me to break one in. Not bad for a 20 dollar investment.

That's a lucky streak for sure. I rarely gamble except when the lotto gets up there but have won all sorts of stuff on the radio like concert tickets etc. I used to work with a guy that was the luckiest SOB I've ever met, he'd win nearly anything he entered in or tried. I'm still hoping to win one of the black powder revolvers they give away every year at the SCV raffle but haven't been that lucky yet.

Three of my cousins went there. One is a radiologist, one is a mathmetician at Los Alamos and one is a classical composer that does scores for Hollywood. No question it is a good academic institution. People like Ward Churchill and others there just tend to give it a bad image.
