I have a Hawken in .50 Cal, and for an upcoming hunt I am trying T/C Maxi-Balls, the 370gr version, and they shoot pretty good so now I am in search of a mould so that I can cast my own. I am also in the process of obtaining a .490 round ball mould, as they are much more fun to shoot.

Thanks. Would it use Lyman single or double cavity handles? I also have RCBS handles.

High Desert Hunter:

My Lyman Maxiball moulds #364615 and #504617 are in the small blocks; the #540619 is a single cavity mould in the large blocks.

Thanks again.

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." Just a couple of observations on Maxi-Ball molds, i.e., .50cal. I purchased a nearly new T/C 370gr. mold last month for my Knight Big Horn rifle. My friend Vly was kind enough to lend me his Lyman MB mold for a "test drive." While both molds cast visually identical CB's, they were NOT the same upon closer analysis. E.g., whereas the T/C's droppings averaged 368gr., those of the Lyman were heavier, 379gr. With the possible exception of length, which I forgot to measure, the Lyman mold had a greater diameter in every key dimension than the T/C and was more difficult to start and seat down bore. Nevertheless, although the 2 projectiles were indeed different, they were equally accurate @ 50yds. I.e., it was possible to put 5 into 1.5" or less at that distance. (I have a photo of of the T/C group, but either my 'puter or this site's software no longer allows me to post it.) Hope this casts some light on the subject.

These are todays results with commercial (store bought) 370gr Maxi-Balls, next weekend I will be shooting the rest of them, and make sure they will group at 100yards, then lookout big game.
