I have a 336 in .30-30 and 39A .22 I bought new back in the 70's. Many years ago I replaced the factory sights with receiver rear and front post. Not paying attention, I put both rear sight assemblies in the same box without identifying which rear sight came off of which rifle. The time has come to sell the 336, so I want to return the sights to original configuration. I notice now that the blades are of different height. In the photo below, the sight on the left has a distance from the bottom of the blade to the top of about 0.136". On the sight on the right that distance is about 0.23". The elevators off the 2 sights are exactly the same as is the height of the original front beads.

My guess is that the blade with the greater 0.23" height is the correct one for the 336. My reasoning is that due to it normally being fired at longer distances than the .22 39A it would need to start with more rear elevation for zeroing at 100+ yards at which a .30-30 would more likely be fired.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks for your help

If the dovetails are the same, put one of them on the .22 and try it.

Thanks for the thought but the .22 currently has a front globe sight on it as well as a receiver sight. I do not want to take both of them off just to try the blades. I was hoping someone could tell me which rear blade in the posted photo is the right one for the .30-30.

I have one I pulled off of my 1977 336 when I scoped it.I can take a look at it tonight when I get home from work and measure it.

Thank you KMac. That will be extremely helpful. Our rifles must be very close in manufacture date.

Thanks again

The shorter blade goes on the M336.

Well I thought I remembered taking the whole sight off. But It looks like I just pulled the elevator off so It would drop down low enough to mount the scope. And the gun is up at my cousins ranch right now so I cannot look at it. Sorry.

I will be of no help, I'm in same boat as you. I have Lyman 66s on 39-336-1894-1895 and they
are all in same box. Same with fronts, they all are sporting Marble Patridge blades.

I guess we share the same pain. The guy who acts like he wants to buy my 336 wants everything to be "all original" even if it means ignoring the superiority of the receiver rear/front post combination. oh well.....

izzyjoe,

Excellent, thank you. Based on your observation and pietro's feedback I will definitely install the shorter rear sight.

Thanks again to everyone who commented here. It's great to be able to get such a quick answer.

have a great evening everyone
