I got this great tool with my lathe/mill and have all the plates but did not get any instructions.
Now I need to cut a gear 2.850" in diameter with 53 teeth to fit a worm gear on a motor.
I figure a tooth at every 6.7924528*. ????????? No idea how or what plate and holes to use. I can't use the eyeball method!
Does anyone have instructions or experience that can help?

Here's a tutorial that'll help guide your info search:

A Vertex head is used in this write-up, too. You'll need a plate with a 53-hole circle. I also have one of these DHs and might have instructions in a carefully chosen place somewhere. Might could find 'em and send you a copy.

If you have no DH experience at all, another good place to start would be Machinery's Handbook, used copies of which are all over. Get the actual handbook, not just the 'guide to use of tables.'

I admire guys who don't limit themselves with doubts, but just go ahead and git 'er done.

I think 53 is a prime number so you will need a 53 hole plate. You may want to post that on Practical Machinist board or Home Shop Machinist board to get confirmation.

Thanks guys, that will really help.
I can't start it for a while, I am set up for milling some mold blocks now and hate to move the vice and have to set it up again.

I did some googling on this, and the answer I got is that 40 holes on a 53 hole plate will be the proper index.

You can XY coordinate the 53 holes(to add a 53 hole circle where it might fit on one of your exhisting index plates) but it will take you awile to drill all of them :-).

If the Vertex can use change gears it is possible to divide in 53 by using a 33 hole plate and 3 gears. I have a manual , send me a note if you want a copy.
