Not a "Tip or trick" but I need some info on a .44-40 reamer.

Working on a Cimarron Model P with slightly tapered and undersized neck section. Makes it real hard to use .429 boolits. I figure Uberti had reamers spec'd to the original cartridge using .427 dia boolits. That extra .003" sure would help.

Anyone have a recent .44-40 finish reamer designed for .429 boolits?

Reading some accounts of Cimarron's "customer service" when it comes to "specs" I really don't want to have to send this one back to Texas.

Another "bummer" with this one is that all 6 throats mic;d at .4335"-.434". Maybe almost "pure" lead would bump up .003". Funny, because they did use barrels with perfect .429 groove dia.:-?

I hate to suggest this but I think your option is buy a 357 cylinder and re chamber to your spec's.

With the throats that large I'm not sure .430 boolits would get you anything!

Your also right about warranty work I think they'd tell you it's just fine for "cowboy" shooting.

You might check with the reamerrental folks and see what diameter their .44-40 reamers make the necks. The other option is to have a custom reamer made to your specifications. The last time I did this it cost $88 which was a bargain compared to what my gunsmith had estimated. I had the same issue with a 1875 Remington replica. I sent it back and got a refund. Once you modify your revolver, you will also need modified reloading dies.

I'm not sure I understand your question? Are you wanting to shoot .429 bullets in .44-40 caliber brass...in a .44-40 caliber revolver?

The .44-40 caliber firearms for the most part have undersized bullets as compared to bullets used in .44 special or .44 magnum cartridges, as the barrels should mike out to around .426 or .427 diameter.

That is an assumption I've been aware of for some time now...am I wrong?

Please look into this aspect, before doing the reamer enlargement.

IOW, the throats are WAY oversize for even .429 boolits.

Yeah, the original .44-40 used .427 dia bullets and groove. This one has .429 groove dia. and .434 throats.

I suppose that since case thickness at the mouth is roughly .007 the neck reamed to .459-.460 would handle a .434 dia custom boolit and things should work much better.

I'll just wait and see what Cimarron has to say.
