358 Win and H335

Does anyone have a recommended load for 358 Win and H335 using 200grn cast boolits?

Hodgdon lists 44.0-48.5/H335/200 for the .358 Winchester. I'm TOLD that H335 tends to burn sorta dirty, unless pushed pretty hard. I have no experience with the cartridge or the propellant, so your results could easily differ. IMR-3031 and IMR-4895 seemed to give best velocities with 200 grain bullets. You might want to look into those propellants.

H335 is not a good choice for cast bullets in the 358 Winchester. It is great for full power jacketed bullet loads however.

I apologize... I didn't see the part about cast bullets, but I should have.

The data I gave for IMR-3031 was also for jacketed bullets, so it is probably too emphatic to use with cast projectiles.
It's probable that you can safely experiment with cast projectiles and charges of H4895 that are no less than 60% of max charges for jacketed projectiles of the same weight. This doesn't help you out much with H335, but it is one possible way to get good performance with cast bullets. You might call or e-mail Hodgdon about a similar strategy with H335 and/or IMR-3031, but I suspect they will recommend against it with the former, but might okay it with the latter.

The RCBS Cast Bullet Manual #1 Lists the following loads:
42.0-44.0/IMR-4350/208gr. LFN ----> 1769-1849 f/s
24.0-26.0/IMR SR4759/208gr. LFN -> 1836-1970 f/s
23.0-25.0/Alliant 2400/208gr. LFN --> 1896-2043 f/s

A 1971-vintage Lyman manual says 30.0-40.0/IMR-3031/206gr. cast w/gas check gives 1580-2150 f/s. That same load gives very similar velocities with a 247gr. cast w/gas check.

3031 would be your better bet. I couldn't get 335 to do much for me.
So far 3031 and 4198 have been my most productive powders with the 358 Win.

I have been shooting 245 gr Saeco with 39 gr of H335-- accuracy was poor --I did not try to go up-- went back to
H322 38 gr with the same Saeco bullet shot a little over 2" at 100
my .358 is a very shot out Weatherbye Vanguard and is used as my "bottom gun" range in the bottom is normally 50 yds or so -- but it is possible to shoot 100 yds + so accuracy at 2"+ is fine -- but I will be refining the load to a new Lee 200 gr casting-- 39 gr start with
The .358 has been a favorite since the mid 70's-- H335 is a good JSP powder -- the jury is still out on cast but so far not so good

Try some Reloader 7... Don't have my load data right here but whatever the "accuracy" load in the Lyman manual is for the 200 grain cast bullet gave 1900 fps and right at MOA at both 100 and 200 yards... It shot the MiHec 210 gr. HPs even better.

That was with a 16.5" Ruger Frontier...

I went back to the H335 powder in my shot out .358-- I tried 40 gr Fed primer and the 200 gr Lee .58 mold --Hornady gas checks, the boolit weighs 208gr and measures out at .3585 to .359 with acww
at 75 yards -- this is my swamp gun-- nice triangle 3 inches-- will clock it at the next shooting session-- this is much better
at some time will likely rebarrel the action... -- have owned 3 -358s and wish i had kept them all..-- I wonder what larger cal. can be had in the .308 hull as a wild cat. :)

335 doesn't work with cast. 40.5 grns of 4895 with RCBS 35-200FN has been my go to load for years.
