Nice tutorial!
:)

I have been doing this a short time myself. center stickers included, but we use just the ones for yard/garage sale price stickers. I think I saw where you posted about making them in the "What did I do in the Reloading Room today" topic. Glad ya took the time to show it in pics for folks. I really like the shelf liner idea, & the holograph looking sheets. Gonna try that sometime if I rememeber to pick some up.
:)

I really like the idea.
:)

We just used to use plain reg. paper plates & then those little "cake" plates you mention, plus cereal & beer/soda pop boxes before & use a wide black or red permanent"magic" marker to make the bullseye & rings. Gonna have to try to find one of those white or silver ones like what it appears you have, to try that myself. Likely gonna use old lids for the rings though, until I can find a compass around here.

Great project to do with my grandboys too. They are starting to learn firearm safety & marksmanship here at our place with bb-guns. At 7 & 8 they are already pretty good shots, but the 7 yr old shines... They really like it when they can easily see where they are hitting & do not have to walk up to paper targets to do so. The storebought "spinners" are fun too, but they like to make the homemade"See-'em" targets too.

Thanks again for taking the time!
:)

9 printable targets,

Print Full Size on 8.5x11" Paper

Page 2 - 1/3 Size IPSC Competition Target
Perfect for printing out and taping on your walls for dry-fire practice. 1/3 Size to mimic
farther distances.

Page 3 - 1/4 Size IPSC Competition Target
Smaller-sized IPSC torso target to simulate even farther distances. Page 3

Page 4 - Dot Torture Test
The best training you can get in 50 rounds. Start at 3 yards and keep all the shots in the
circle targets. If your range doesn't allow draws, start with your pistol on the table or at low
ready.

Page 5 - Bill Drill
Start at 7 yards and shoot 6 shots as fast as you can into the 6x11 target. This drill is meant
to work on speed without sacrificing accuracy. Move the target back to make it more difficult.

Page 6 - Walk Back Drill
Place at 3 yards and shoot 5 rounds at each target. This simulates 3x5 cards placed at 3
yards, 5 yards, and 7 yards. Work on accuracy instead of brute speed.

Page 7 - 5x5 Drill
5 shots, 5 inches, 5 yards, 5 seconds, and do 5 times. Perfect score is 25/25.

Page 8 - Red Dot 25 Yard Zero
Simulates a 50 yard zero but taken at 25 yards to make it easier for 1x optics such as red
dots. Line up with the colored bullseye so that the bullet impacts the gray bullseye.
Calibrated for M193 5.56 cartridge dropoff.

Page 9-10 - 100 Yard Rifle Targets
Two versions for both MRAD and MOA scopes to help you zero your sights.

I guess I am a little dense, but I am having problems following those instructions, seem to be several different ones ran together. Tell me if I am getting this straight:

You choose a backing paper the color you like, then coat it with some sort of sticky paper or tape, then spray paint a color other than the backing?

Do you have to use sticky paper/tape over the backing or could you just glue a different color sheet on top and omit the paint?

Thanks,

Rosewood

Yes! to the bolded question. That is how it is done.
:)

The OP, Grmps, is currently, "unavailable" to comment, so I will give it a try as I have been using these for some time now.

You have to use the "sticky" layer( I use tape currently)& not another piece of poster board because it is the impact of the projectile that "tears" the painted tape when it makes a hole & the paint flakes off around the hole to show the background colored poster board to see the impact point.

Using just another layer of poster board would likely only show you the hole in the front poster board, and perhaps just a bit of the back one, since there is no paint to flake & you would be basically just punching holes in a thicker" target. That paint layer is held on to the "sticky" tape/sheet, but does not adhere to it like it would if you painted the porous paper, so it readily "flakes" around the point of impact showing the backing poster board color thru the now "cleared of paint" tape in a generally circular shape unless you have a tumbling projectile.

Examples from a couple posts back on the results:
https://i.imgur.com/iUnQ9ii.jpg

Left side in this one is a very good example of what is happening as well:
https://i.imgur.com/ueRtKkd.jpg

I hope that answers your question(s).
:)

Of course, you can certainly try out using two different colored sheets, but I am pretty sure you will want to use the colored sheet, sticky tape/sheet & paint layer method. It really does work well, IMO.

G'Luck!
:)

I bought some red glitzy wrapping paper at Dollar Tree. I plan on spray gluing it to cardboard then covering it with spray glue. The last layer will be plastic wrap over the spray glue then paint it black. Scribe the target on the black paint. Am I on track, not using the same materials as recommended?

Grmps,

Great posts and explanations.

I have followed pretty much the same process that you have explained, but I use craft paper on a roll that I bought at a craft store and adhesive carpet protector from home store. Both are 24 inches wide and 50 foot roll. You can do as big a length as you have a table to lay out and then cut to size. Much cheaper and faster than tape or shelf paper, but same process.

What I am not smart enough to grasp is how you are putting the circles and cross lines on the black targets. Is this a white marker on the compass or ?? Can you please post exactly what the pen is.

Thanks for a great post.

I download and color print the target I want from one of the brazillion free target sites, then use the color copier at the office to print targets on cheap soft construction paper. The kind school children use in art projects. the stock is cheap and soft so the bollit can cut clean holes. I get large packs at the school supply store, white, light grey , pale yellow or off white all make good targets.
They are fast and easy to make....if you have an office copier .
Midway USA also has targets you can print for free.

I don't think anyone has mentioned it here, but it just occurred to me today when I was shooting at one of these, that I can reuse these DIY poster board ones simply by taping over any stray holes & putting a piece of a cutout from an tattered un-repairable one & taped it to the backside of the target to cover the main hole & then tape the front of it as well, then painting the repaired target all over again.

Doing this makes the target looks new, and start over shooting at it until it is in tatters to be basically un-repairable.

Then cut out any un-hit portions from that un-repairable one & use them to repair other targets.

I even took the un-hit portions of targets & taped them together to make a completely new target & once I painted it again over the taped pieces seams it became another target to use.

Some might call me "cheap", but I call it "frugal". If ya can't afford to buy new all the time, then make do with what ya have...

Great printable resources. I like the "shoot and see" recipes as well. Going to save a lot of money. Thanks to all.

Sharpie makes markers in silver, gold, and bronze colors, plus you can get white paint pens, might help someone on this :)

Anything from the freezer: fruit, icefilled jugs or what not will make a good pop if sized to your caliber.
22LR and grapes are good and birds/insects will clean up nice.
Oranges and .223, Melons and 45-70.

How would I size a grape to .22?
