Good protectant

What is a good protectant for coating guns that are going to spend a while in a safe? I've used some Baricade before and come back a month or two later and found some rust spots on the gun.

The recent near miss I had with Harvey and the flooding I moved all the guns upstairs to a closet out of the safe to get above any possible flooding. Things are getting back to normal so I had some time to clean them all to put them back.

For a grease Rig is great. For a non grease Eezox's is outstanding. Some use microcrystalline wax but I have never used it for that.

I've used RIG in bores for decades, but now a can of Corrosion-X is my choice. I also coat any steel covered by wood with Johnson's Paste Wax.

I use Breakfree Collector. I bought a big jug 20 yrs ago. A little thick, but works great.

I have used paste waxs for metal protection on hunts in foul weather. Just wipe it on in a couple light coats letting dry between coats. I don't rub it out until after the hunt or season is over. Rig grease applied with the lambs wool pad is an old stand by. Once impregnated the pad does a lot before needing more worked into it. I treat my BPCR rifles with Barricade once a year at start of the season. This offers some added protection for metal that's cleaned with water based solvents. Another good over looked protectant is you bullet lube, A patch used to wipe bases picks up enough to be used to treat bores and a pad with some to rub down the outside metal and polish it a little. I once bought a muzzle loader that had sat for 15-18 years bore looked nasty inside at the auction viewing. I got it cheap due to this. I got it home and it sat for a few days. I started ckeaning the bire and things weren't coming out just smearing around, so I pulled the barrel and used a blowdrier on High to heat muzzle down. Shortly barrel warmed and the old 50-50 beeswax alox lube started dripping out. I got it cleaned and had a pristine new looking bore showing. Cosmoline thick greases bullet lube all work but can be a chore to remove.

Car wax works. On Parkerized guns I set them in the sun until hot to the touch, then wipe the steel parts with a shop rag wet with motor oil. The matte finish Remington's get this "seasoning" as do ARs- but I usually paint them.

What I've used with great satisfaction for the last 20 years is a product called LPS 3, which is a long-term metal storage protectant. It's available in aerosol and by the jug, smells like cherry pop, goes on like thirty-weight and dries to a smearable petroleum wax that can be readily removed when the time comes. IIRC, it's rated for two years rust prevention on metals stored inside. I never tried it outdoors, but I use it on my pin gages, surface plates, and other tools and things which are unused for long periods, as well as the inevitable safe queens. Never found any rust. Because the protective element is a petroleum WAX, rather than an oil, it's BP compatible and I've used it as patch lube without the ghastly petroleum/BP fouling problems. It's also useful for light-duty anti-seize purposes. It sure keeps lug nuts from rusting to the lug threads or the rim seats. One of the best non-typical uses I've found for it is battery terminal corrosion protection. When they're reassembled clean, and it's liberally applied, there won't be any corrosion for as long as it's there.

2. WD40 Specialist Long Term Rust Inhibitor.

3. Shooter's Choice Rust Prevent.

4. Birchwood Casey Barricade.

They are all top choices for what you want, I've tried them in the hot-humid Louisiana climate and they work.

I tried barricade and was not impressed. My nice shotgun had rust freckles after 3 weeks or so in the safe.

I use the same for long term storage, LPS-3. Good stuff!

Ed's Red. It is equal parts ATF, odorless mineral spirits and kerosene. Under good storage conditions it will protect up to 1 year. You can also add 1 additional part of lanolin which will provide a long term storage protectant beyond 1 year. The lanolin will have to be heated in order to properly mix.

I have had one of these in my safe for years, no problem with rust. Simple normal wipe down with your favorite gun oil, and place in safe. And I live in SC high heat and humidity.
