I have settled on using a conversion in my 1858 Remington revolver. I will be using
light loads , this is for fun plinking after all. My plan is push 228 grain RN lead bullet
and use 3f holy black just like the old days.
One concern is the crimping. My loading equipment is Lee , press mold etc.I will see how well
45 ACP seating dies work.
In smokeless cartridges I used no crimp on both 9mm and 45 till discovered bullet movement,
immedialty got a tapper crimp. Problem solved .
The only roll crimp I seem to find is other brands, like RCBS, will they fit a Lee press?
I'm sure this has been discussed before , but can't find it..........

I would suggest you get the Lee collet style factory crimp die although any brand of die will work in your Lee press as long as it has the standard 7/8X14 threads. Gp

If your chamber dimensions are extremely tight, this may dictate which crimp you use to insure positive chambering of the rounds when the fouling begins to build up. I shoot the Schofield in the .45 Colt's with smokeless so anything goes in this combination. With black powder you should have no problem with ignition with even the least crimp. I shoot the .45-70 with black and many of the guys I shoot with don't crimp at all.

I will probably shoot Holy Black for the most part . I don't feel comfortable with no crimp, cuzz
used to smokeless.
When loading up BP by volume ,I'll be using 200 or 228 gr lead boolits of my own casting..... what else.
I see others fill case to top then seat their favorite boolit. Seems to
satisfy the no air gap need.
Any comments ?

You will need a crimp. You will have bullet pull and lock up your cylinder without it. In the 44-40 I can put in 37gr Goex FFG, compress it, and seat a boolit on that.

I see several folks use FFg rather than FFFg. In pistols .
What is the real difference in results if any, or is in part ,convinance ?
