Ned, my QL thinks your 18.5 grains of Green Dot is 144% of case capacity and would give over 100k psi -- no way to cram that much GD into a 45 colt case according to QL. One other data point that would make QL more in line with your components is the weight of water your case would hold at level full.

Using the 1.76" COAL gets us down to 125% of case capacity -- I think you can compress to 105 to 110% depending on the powder but 125%? I don't think so. I tried GD in my 45 and 454 cases and sure enough you can get the powder in there, but there just isn't much room for seating the bullet. And if you did, QL thinks you get 85 to 100k psi depending on how short you have to make 'em.

I think that fellow's powder scale was badly off.

If you wanted all the velocity you could get and if your gun will allow 1.76" length, then 22 grains of power pistol would get you around 1900 fps at a mere 66k psi (I am taking a little "Kentucky windage" for QL's bias against revolvers). A more sane load would be 30 grains of H110 for the same level of compression for 1500 fps at 34k psi.

Note that these estimated pressures go waaaay up if you use a more normal seating depth.

If you want to experiment that badly maybe now is the time to buy QL yourself???
