250 Savage CB load data

Been searching for load data for the 250 Savage using an 85 grain pb boolit. Was poking around the Universal Unique sticky, Unique is what I intended to use. Then, in the 44 Treasure Trove I found the Lyman Ideal #40 1955 manual which has a bunch of loading data for cast 250 Savage. Super!

I ordered 500 of the Meister Hard Cast Bullets and will do some serious plinking. If there is anyone who has experience with this cartridge and cast boolits especially in the M99 (I have two), please chime in.

I have had better luck with 4198 in my 250/3000 but it isn't a Mod 99. Its an Encore with a custom barrel which I had made when I traded away my Mod99. Great caliber. My load is about 17 gr of 4198 with 103's that are not hard cast but moderate cast. My groups with iron sights run about 2.5 at 100 yes which is good for my old eyes. When I did have that M99 in 250, it preferred the 87's over the 100's but all I have now is 100-107's (several molds). Unique should work though. The sweet spot will probably be somewhere around 11 gr if your barrel has that personality. Over the last year I have been trying to figure out which CB is better, a 103 RNGC from a Lyman mold in Loverin style or a 107 semi-pt GC from a Saeco custom mold. It is a very close call. I also have a spire point 100 gr GC which shoots well but strictly for punching paper.

Well, I went down to the shop and looked. I have IMR4198 and H4198 on hand and will try them. I think I am using the 4198's in my 45/70. Also have Unique and 2400. The new Unique seems to burn cleaner at least in my SBH 44mag and Blackhawk 45LC.
My M99 with the Redfield peeps is a tack driver, with the factory Remington 100 grain stuff. That's all I have ever shot in them.

4198 will work for sure. I used Red Dot and a Lyman 90 gr fp in my 25-06 with good results

ETA--Velocities ran from 1500-1650 FPS. All of these designs have gas-check shanks and used Hornady gas checks in all cases. Even at lower velocities from 1100-1350 FPS, the RCBS 25-85-CB design has not shot as well as the gas check designs, whether in 250 Savage or 25/20 WCF.

Thank you for the data. The 258-85 Miester hard cast is described as a round nose flat point and looks very much like the RCBS 25-85 except for a smaller meplat. It will be interesting to see what I can work up using the 4198's, 2400 and Unique.

My pleasure, Poppa. I really want that RCBS plain base to do good things in the 25/20, because with accurate bullets the little monster is an unalloyed joy to whack varmints with. So far, it just won't group with either 312's or 420's work quality. These heavier flatnoses do MUCH better work on critters than 22 LR does.

My old Marlin 25-20 has a fast twist liner in it at about 9.5-10 twist, wasn't my choice. I use a Noe version of the 257283, plain based mold with 9.3gr. 4198, PC'd for a practice and small game load. Very accurate and effective at about 1270-1300 fps.
There was a group buy 80gr. gas check rnfp tumble lube style bullet I got in on that is probably my most accurate load with 12 gr.4198.
The old Lyman 257420gc is what I used for years over 13gr 4198 at around 2000+fps. Worked great but NOT small game friendly.
In this rifle, either of the two 4198s have shot the best of anything I've tried.
This is probably my favorite cast shooter, wish I had picked up one of the modern Marlin M94 25-20s while they were available. I hate to put too much wear on the 100+ year old Marlin.

270--one of my 25/20s is a modern Marlin levergun, a 94 CL from about 1989. IMR-4198 has done stellar work with jacketed bullets in this rifle--12.0 grains with the Speer 75 grain flatnose is the rifle's best load. In general, both 420 and 312 shoot better at higher-than-blackpowder velocities. I suspect the OEM twist rate (1-14") might have something to do with that.

I am about to try some RL-7 and AA-1680 in the 25/20 for grins & jollies.

"The load" for my .250 bolt action Savage Mdl 16 with a 1:10 twist is 14.3g of Reloder 7 and a Saeco 25-100 boolit sized to .2594. Alloy used is 1:10(ww:lino) for a Bhn of 11. Primer is Rem 9-1/2 and OAL for my rifle is 2.450. Velocity is 1695 and the SD is 15. When I do my part, this load has produced less than 1" groups at 100 yds, and has won several local CBA Hunter rifle matches.

Been shooting an 80 grain boolit, i got the mold from N.O.E.

They have been fun out of several from the 25x39 to the 25-06.
