Floorplate latch ideas

I have a 98 mauser bottom metal in my possession that I screwed up the triggerguard sporterization on. So my solution was to cut the bow off and start over with a shotgun bow. I want to hinge my floor plate. I have the hinge figured out. But the latch has me lost. Any suggestions?

I convert the Mauser Bottom metal to a Hinged floorplate.
It isnt that hard, and can be done with hand tools.
Let me see if I can find a picture of the floorplate and latch.
It is similar to the Mauser Sporting rifles built before WW2

Yes, and a very good system it is. You also see some in which the lever is pivoted in the bottom metal and the lever itself holds the floorplate.

It needs to lock fairly firmly in place, for if you ever find cartridges cascading over your feet, it will be at the worst of all possible times. I don't know if you have a stud on the floorplate and dimple in the lever, or the reverse. The former of these is better, as it won't leave a shiny streak on the floorplate bluing.

If you look closely at the floorplate, there is a shiney spot in the center.
That is a stud that I made that comes thru the floorplate and is held in by the Magazine Spring.
There is a detent in the lever, so when in the closed position, it sort of snaps in to lock the lever in the closed position.
So far these have never come flying open on any of my rifles.
This rifle is a 30-06

This would suit my 416 Ruger build perfectly. But given I have full intentions of taking this rifle on safari in a couple years it has to be an absolutely foolproof setup.

Yes, I could see that. I just couldn't see whether it was a stud or a dimple. There would probably be enough flexibility in the lever for it to snap onto a fixed stud with no separate detent.

But that Spring loaded detent works great.
I had the Cam Lock beveled so it would tighten as it closed.
But you know how metal to metal wears over time.
So I thought a spring loded detent was in order.

Call me different, but I've become fond of the extended floorplate release, but it won't work with a hinged bottom plate. The best by far is the release made into the trigger bow, such as the '09 Argentine.

The 09 argentine release was what I wanted when I started. But since I *****d the original trigger bow that became not an option real quick

I have modified Turkish Trigger Guards to the side button release like on the old Spanish Mausers, and did some like the Argentine.
But you have to weld up the hole on a 98 floorplate and weld an extension on to the back of the floorplate.
I like the Turkish Trigger guards.
You can find them cheaper than the German, and they dont have the lock screw holes that I sometimes weld up and fill in on some of the German ones when I do a Custom Rifle

While I like the aesthetics of the lever latch I know I would hit that lever at the very worst moment and dump all my shells on to the ground - if I was lucky. If not it would be a foot of snow or 3 inches of mud. Anyway this is what I've been doing lately.

This is a 1910 Mexican Mauser I've been working on for a while.

That is a cool idea, I will have to try that one.
But now that the OP had to remove his trigger guard and is installing a shotgun bow on his, it will not be one of his options.

The lever on the floorplate is probably the best option with a shotgun triggerguard.

That's what I'm thinking. But this does give me an idea... Who's to say I couldn't weld up the front of the bow, or better yet weld a piece in and utilize this? Although I am currently experimenting with the lever idea.

I also picked up beater yugo the other day I also intend to hinge the plate on and I will not mess up this bow when I recontour it.

If you want a shotgun style trigger-guard, you could use the guard itself as a rotary lever, operating a latch either inside or outside the bottom metal. It would be easiest done with that has a round spigot at the front, rather than a flat tab to be transfixed by a transverse pin.

Track of the Wolf have a wide range of investment castings. I have one I can no longer find listed, like this but with only the curved tang coming part-way down the front of the pistol grip. I plan it for use, in a fixed position, when I get around to making a double set trigger for my Mannlicher-Schoenauer. But as a rotary lever there is no way that could turn while your hand is on the grip.

i'm not smart enough to take pictures. so, i'll try to splain what i did. i drilled and tapped the underside of the floorplate to 1.250-28 used a short bolt same size. and turned the head of the bolt round and shortened the thickness. then stippled the surface so that thumb pressure is enough to unscrew the bolt. by underside of the floorplate i guess i mean the bottom of the magazine box. not real fast, but, i've only used it a couple times
