How's this for a cool find? A first variation Remington mold for the .44-77 SBN. It's marked "44 S" on the side, and "25" on top where the sprue plate covers the number. Not sure what "25" means, unless these were serial numbered?
Needs a new sprue plate built, but I might have a source for repros I think. It's also had a round ball cavity added at some point in it's life, but it was cheap, so no big deal. I have an early Rolling Block in this caliber, so neat to have the mold too!

I'll cast up some bullets once I get a sprue plate, and see how they shoot in my Roller!

That really is a cool find. I would have bought it and I don't have anything in that caliber.

I would have bought it too, even if I didn't already own a Roller in this caliber!

Spent a bit of time this morning and using some scrap steel, I cut out a close shape to what the sprue plate should be. Then filed, sanded, drilled the shape for the sprue plate. After a test fit I polished it up a bit, blued it, and gave it some patina to match the mold blocks.

Thanks! Hope it's close enough to the original sprue plate.

Looks factory!

Thanks. Factory were bright blued, and mold was simply polished bare steel. But since mine shows it's patina, I didn't want to bright blue the new sprue plate. I Oxpho blued it, and then removed enough bluing to make it look appropriate.

Good question! I'm anxious to see what the diameter will be! A .44-77 bullet should be around .451"-.452" diameter.

Wow that looks great, what a cool find.

Thanks! First one I've ever seen for sale, other than at big gun auction houses, with stupid high prices!

That is a cool find and you did a great job with the sprue plate. Curious to see how it casts. Have fun.

You put your finger over one of the holes and pour the lead into the other - simple!!

Good question Jack! It's not an original part of a Remington mold, and something someone added later. I can't see how a person could cast the round ball and have it fill out fully? I've contemplated having a young welder I use tig weld it up, and then polish it off smooth. But I may just leave it alone and not use that.

Nice find - I am jealous. Looking forward to a report on usage. I am thinking the dia would be around .447 or 8. Please keep us posted

Since rifles in .44-77SBN are usually .451" bore, it could be smaller if it was a paper patch mold. But being a grease groove mold I'd expect it to be closer to bore size and not .447"
