Because I have some H205 powder and want to use it in the 30-30 with the Lee c309150f. I know it's a slow powder for the case size. 36 grs to the base of the bullet.
Will it work?

I'm betting you'll have plenty of un-burned powder. IIRC, that powder was the delight of the 7mm Rem. Magnum crowd back in the day. Now the slowest powder I ever heard of being used successfully in the 30-30 was IMR 4350, where a 200 grain boolit on top of a case full of the stuff was alleged to be poison on eastern white tails by Frank Marshall Jr. H205 is supposedly a long ways slower than that. I'd use it in my 30-06, or 270 or Magnum cases, not for the poor old 30-30.

Winchester 748 works so well for me that I have never felt the urge to splurge on other slower powders, at least not for the 30-30.

If you do try it use the full 36 gr.....do not reduce as that powder has been involved in several S.E.E.s. Would probably work better with a heavier bullet. Personally I would not use it and actually advise against it in this application. Just because we want to use a powder doesn't mean it's a good idea, feasable or safe.

4831 does just fine under a 170 at the 34-36gr level.

Actually I think H205 was an "4350" speed powder. If You really wanted to try it there is jacketed 30-30 data in Hodgdons #22 and 23 manuals. I do however agree that heavier bullets are probably better suited with this slow of powder in 30-30 case.
30-30-150 gr bullet-H205 start 35.0 grs-1899 fps, max 38.0- 2045 fps
30-30-170 gr bullet-H205 start 35.0-1817fps, max38.0-2088fps
these are from a 20 inch barrel

My oldest Hornady manual has H205 data for the 06 family. At some point I will try slow burners with cast in the 30-30. I have both 4831s and Norma Magnum

Jacketed bullets require more pressure to engrave the bullet and push it down the bore than do cast bullets. Thus they allow the powder to burn more efficienntly by reaching a satisfactory level of psi.

I was referring to 100-130 grain bullets with a 4350 speed powder in a 30-30 casing, performance can't be good which is shown by the nearly 600 fps deficit compared to an appropriate speed of powder in that casing with 100 gr bullets.

I went ahead and loaded it in the 25-06 over 120gr Sierra bthp. Old bullets for old powder. I found the data in my oldest Hornady manual. I loaded more of my current favorite 3031/150 Lee in the 30-30.

That's something I can't seem to wrap my mind around.
How does the low pressure rounds like .30-30 and .45-70 use the fast powder like 3031; and a high pressure round like magnums use slower powder??
How does the math work out on that???
It just seems as tho fast powder equates to high pressure. why is that not true?

It's magic, not math lol.
And when you get up to the real powerful heavy hitters you're back to fast & medium powders (.375H&H; .458 Win)
