30/30 150gn HP load....

Hello, I'm trying to work up a load using the GT 150gn Hp bullet.

I'm not finding much load data on cast 150gn bullets. My powders on hand are H4895 and H414. I'm guessing that 1800-2000fps would be a good range for this bullet. The rifle is a Winchester 94.

Hodgdon's web site lists 30.5 to 34g of H4895. That powder is safe to start at a 60% load and work up. That's 20.4g and work up. I bet that would put it in the 1600fps range. Don't try it with the 414 use published data.

Starting data for 170 gr bullets will get you started safely for 150 gr.

It's a little slow for the 30-30 for the cast bullet you want to use.
4895 will get you there. H414 is more of a jacketed bullet powder IMO.

If you have the Lyman cast books that bullet resembles a 311440 that has been hollow pointed. I would start with that data. Lighter than the original, so their data will work as the HP will be a lighter bullet.

I'd load that boolit with all the 748 that the case would hold, and sight in, then go looking for Bambi's big brother. I have had excellent results with the 30-30 and an NOE 312-440. 30 to 35 grains would be my best estimate, depending on the make of the brass. Lyman lists 28 grains for 1939 fps up to 37.5 grains for 2400 + fps. The Peak pressure of the Heavy charge is listed as only 35,000 CUP. I've never managed to get that much WW-748 in a 38 case without having it climb up the neck much higher than I cared for. It is extremely accurate out to 100 yards, not so hot beyond that.
A good light load is 17.5 grains of 2400 with the same boolit.

It's not that you cant use 414 powder, its that you can't do a reduced load like the 4895. Go with published data and you can't go wrong.

15.8 adi 2205 for 1600fps works well for a mild load that shoots good out to 580 yrds in my rifle.
Lots of hold over thou.....good easy100yrd load for fast recovery and subsequent shots.
Your 4895 with 28.5 to 30.5 is the load for this powder in my gun...don't know speed but plenty fast enough.

748 is a great powder for cast in 30-30. I have had great results with that powder pushing a 180 gr cast.

This is my first attempt with bullets from this company. I also purchase some 145gn 357 to make some 38 special rounds.

H4895
28gn: 1869 avg
29gn: 1961 avg
30gn: 2032 avg

The 30gn grouped the best.

As an aside, I ordered some of those bullets in 30/30 and .45 Colt. They came today, pretty fast, actually, and they seem like good bullets. They were packed in bubblewrap inside a SFRB, and a few of the noses were deformed as a result. I guess there's no way around that, with a soft cast bullet. The .45 Colt bullets were 250 grain hollowpoints, and you could drive a truck into the cavity.

Hope to be able to post some results soon on how they actually shoot. Thanks to the OP for the link, always nice to find another source for cast bullets, especially soft cast ones.

I would only buy the .311" as that's what I use in all my .30's.
7.5-10gr of Unique is a great target/plinking load.
12.0-15.0gr #2400 is a great all-purpose load.

26.0-30.0gr of H4895 will work great.
