Hi guys!

I'm looking for some suggestions please.
I have a Pedersoli Sharps in 45/70 and I'm looking for a nice accuracy load. I would like to narrow down the powders to a few that have known success if possible.
The bullets are the Lyman Postal 535 or a Hoch nose pour 550. I also shoot the lee 405 flat point plain base. Most likely they will be paper patched.

I hear 5744 is good but I can't find it locally. I might need to drive out of state if that's the consensus.

Thank you all.

for smokeless, with a lyman457132 (casts 520gr for my alloy, not 535gr), I use IMR 4198 25gr. This is about 1178fps, I also have shot Imr 3031 with 31gr which is also about 1180fps. These both shoot pretty accurate at 100yds, anyway. The 405gr, I get the best accuracy with 14gr of Unique. I have also shot the AA5744, but like you said, it is not readily available and it is much more expensive than other powders. I am also shooting a Pedersoli Sharps

For that cal. and bullets like that, I would recommend Swiss 1 1/2fg. a full case, just leave room for the bullet, maybe play a bit with compression.

203037 203038

These were shot at 100 yards. They are my "HOT" loads. For local silhouette matches I cut it back to 23.5 grains.

IMR SR 4759 is nearly impossible to find now. However you've been told correctly that 5744 is a good alternative. I've found that 23.5 grains gave me the same grouping as 4759.

There are a number of places where you can mailorder powder.

Good shooting.

I use loads very similar to toymakers. 23 to 25 grains of SR4759 until my last big cannister is gone. I use a 500 grain Brooks bullet in numerous Ruger, Browning and Ruger falling blocks.

Rel7, 4198, 5744, and 2400 are all outstanding in my 45-70's. I like Rel7 and 4198 the best.

H or IMR?

I've got them both and I can't tell the difference. Great results with both. I called H and they said to use the same load data even though I found a couple of loads with different weights given. FWIW, I only load to Trapdoor levels....at the high end though. I try not to make my gun a "varmint gun".

Measure your chamber. Pedersoli sharps have had chambers 1/8" longer than 45-70 brass. 2 solutions.

1 seat your bulet out that far

2 trim 45-90 brass to the chamber length.

I have had very good results with H4198 and 405 grain Lee HB around 31-32gr mark.

They've already been listed but I'll be redundant; IMR's 3031 and 4198 and Re-7 hve been the best smokeless powders for me in a variety of 45-70's. There isn't a doubt in my mind Unique and 2400 would also work well but I never tried either in the 45-70.
