View Full Version : Jess and 358 Win

To all who have had Jesse rebore your rifle, these are my thoughts/concerns.

My rifle will be heading to Jesse later this morning and got to thinking ( yup trouble is close behind). When I get the barreled action back, can I start shooting cast boolits threw it or should I run some J words down the bore first?

Only reason I'm asking is because I've found some 250gr 2nds for a nice price at $0.17 per bullet.

Here is where my thinking comes in..... LOL
Since I'll be using 308 cases blown out to 358 I could kill 2 birds with one stone. Use the jacketed bullets to fire form the cases and smooth out the bore (if needed).

I know I'll clean it good and slug it to get my mold ordered from Tom and send Lathesmith an IM for a push threw die(if needed).

What did you guys/gals do when you got your rifle back from Jess?

Thanks Robert

Id ask Jesse? He seems to be very highly thought of and Im sure hes conversed with customers about results.

Since I didn't have a mould and I wanted to develop separate deer and elk loads I used Sierra 200 gr RN and Sierra 225 gr BTSP to begin with. I had only about 70 jacketed loads through the barrel(excellent accuracy) when I got the RCBS 200 Fpgc mould. Cast from my alloy they weigh 217 grs lubed & gas checked. I have yet to clean my rifle- I went straight to cast load development which lasted ten minutes because the first load put 4 shots in 1-1/8"@100yds. For me this is a don't worry be happy gun /cartridge combo. I predict you will love yours.
Best, Thomas.

This is my best group so far with cast. The aiming point is 1 inch in diameter. I shoot four shot groups because that is what the magazine holds.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170818/ce0a97d9800dbba16f4a3a1394dbab39.jpg

I can't help on a rebore's break-in; but as a .35 addict, if you've found 250s at that price, you want to get them. The 2nds' flaws will only be cosmetic. The bullet companies recycle, rather than sell as 2nds, any that are flawed in structure or weight.

If you are in a kind, after you get yours of course, you might share a link.

Once I get the rifle back, I'll slug the bore. This will be the boolit design I'm going to order from Tom, haven't decided on 2 or 3 cavity in brass I'm leaning to the 3 cavity.

That boolit looks great.
I have one box of Hornady 250 gr spitzers I'm saving for BIG critters. Meantime in Texas 200 gr cast & jacketed will do.
Are you going to 3 groove? It's great but hard to measure slugs at home.

Those may well be too small for yur rifle. I shoot .360.

0.360" jacketed bullets? Where do find the 0.360s in jacketed bullets? Bump them up in a swage die?

The post you quoted had a link to jacketed bullets. They are fine. For cast, you're correct in that you will want .360 or larger.

dragon813qt,

LOOKS like a REALLY NICE rifle to me. = I'm beginning to think we need to form a JES FAN CLUB.
(I'm about to send another .30-06 rifle to Jesse to reformat to .400B-WI.)

My Model 760 which is now a 9.3x62 Mauser is GREAT but I want a BIG-bore for REALLY BIG game. = A well-aimed 400 grain bullet at 2000FPS should STOP most anything, anywhere on Earth out to 200+M.

Warf- that is a steel Weaver K2.5 of 1970s vintage. I like it. Clear &fast. I won it on ebay for $75.
Google Gary Fellers for vintage scopes.

Good choice on the scope; mine likes .358" as seen on the plate; yours will shoot great. Savages can be made pretty with Boyd's wood.
I'm excited for you.

It didn't start that way. I had Tim Malcolm completely restore it for me. Turnbull did the color case hardening on the lever. . Here is a before pic.

beautiful gun,now is that a single shot, falling block style, or is the mag in the stock, and do they still make those?

Has a rotary magazine in the receiver. Unfortunately they stopped making them many years ago. Mine started out as a lowly 99E in 308. Makes a perfect donor rifle because the E, Economy, models aren't very desirable. Cheap wood, non jeweled bolt and a steel rotor w/ no counter. But it's not a 99C, which has a detachable magazine and is the least desirable model. At least for collectors. Pick up one in 308 and send it to JES to have it rebored to 358 while you still can. Prices keep climbing and good guns are becoming harder to find.

This is why you pay Turnbull what they ask [emoji2]

Slug the throat..slugging the bore won't tell you anything you need to know....(Google "pound cast")

The best boolit for gun is one that fits the throat...

You'll be happy with Jesse's work.

warf73,

My first .358 rifle was a Sako Finn-Wolf that I bought "for peanuts" with a broken stock at the RAFB Rod & Gun Club in 1970.
I had it restocked in French walnut by the late Klaus Fuchs, the local/noted stock-maker in Miesau, BRD & found that it hits European Red Deer like an 8# sledgehammer & W/O "beating you to death". Thus, I believe that you will be very PLEASED with your JES-remodeled rifle for any woods-hunting out to 200+M..

True on the 99E's Dragon- the ones with stamped-checkered birch stocks were UGLY. But they will clean up nice. There was an older 99E Pre war I think and they were NICE.

My new 358 should be here in a couple of weeks. Of course I had it built. Rem 700 trued stainless action, krieger barrel and B&C medalist stock. Hope it's a tack driver. Been about 2 years or more accumulating parts and waiting while at the smith.
