I have a few old pre 64 winchesters. One that looks fairly awful but shoots extremely well then I have this other one. 30 WCF looks better for sure but has zero rifling left in the barrel. Which is no great surprise, I think I gave 100 bucks for it. I'm not terribly concerned with collectible value, I'm a shooter. So we are down to rebore or rebarrel. I am more inclined to rebarrel as it's a job I can do myself. Who is making a good barrel for the old winchesters these days. I figured since I was at it I might as well put a 26" barrel in instead of the 20.

Here: http://homesteadparts.com/shopcart/Winchester_1894.htm

but expensive. A rebore to 35-30 is less.

That was my dilemma. I found a couple for 3-400.00 but the rifle isn't worth that. Won't be after rebarrel or rebore either.

Why not relined. Than the original barrel and receiver are kept intact.

Six of one and a half dozen of the other..............I have my fair share of old winchesters in the pre WW1 and as a shooter I would spend the money on a 26"
barrel and pay the difference to have it re-lined ! You may luck out and find that long barrel with a very shootable bore !!! 35-55,32-40 & 25-35 will cost !!!
If ya want a round barrel ....way cheaper..... Keep Shooting those OLD WINCHESTERS.....they feel so much better in your hand !!!

I've been looking for one in 30-30, I hand load for enough rifles as it is. I like being able to run to town for some ammo if I need it. Plus the 30-30 is just a damn fine round in my humble opinion.

I didn't know they made a round barrel 26".....Hmm, I'll keep an eye out for one.

Id like to have one rebored to 35-30. I have a post 64 that I consider having rebored from time to time, but the bore is in good shape. And factory ammo still lures me. I like the older ones, but I got a fair deal on the one I have that is made in the 70s, and I love it for the user it is. Now... If I had one that didnt have a good bore, and shot to match, rebore would be the way I'd go.

Ol Deuce, those are real nice old guns.

Not to hijack the thread, but how many rounds does the magazine hold on the long barreled one?

why not just find a used take off barrel instead of buying a new one? there are a bunch of them on ebay for around $150. most of them are post 64 though. not sure if that matters.

I got a rifle conversion from gun parts corp. a few years ago. it is 26" part round part octagon. got sights fore arm all the parts needed to make it a rifle. they said to cut down the carbine mag. tube but I will leave it at 2/3's mag. I have a post 64 94 I am going to use it on. I did screw the barrel on one of my takedowns and it shot good.

The post 64 barrels will not work on the pre 64's. I tried to do that back in the 80's and was told by a smith that they are not interchangable.

I want to go back to the op' s statement that it has no rifling left. Have you used something like a foulout system. I have found that several of the rifles I bought as "shot out" were just packed with leading, and after a good cleaning where actually fine.

Sell me yours for cheap and get yourself another 30-30. I'd love to have a 35-30 made and yours sounds like a good candidate.
