Removing impressed checkering

1965 Remington 700 ADL stock.
I've shortened and reshaped the for end so I'm good there. I don't wish to drastically change the pistol grip with a rasp but I just can't get that last little bit out! I know, I know "shut up and sand"! Any body been here? I like the shape and grain of this stock- hence the frustration. I've tried steaming but the little dimples remain....

Lots of steam will eventually get just about everything out.

I've done enough of them, I joyfully take a rasp to them, and remove the atrocities!

When I refinished the stock of my 700 adl, I just recut the impressed checkering with a checkering tool. I found a trigger guard with a floor plate off a 700 bdl at the lgs, and installed it on my rifle.

That, I think, is the best answer, as long as the actual shape of the panel isn't too exotic. You will never find a better laid-out pattern to follow. If you feel you must sand or rasp it away, you may find a visible ghost pattern of artificial figure left in the wood. Fiddleback grain is just ondulation of the fibres, and the ondulation may be pressed in further than the actual diamonds. But those same stocks are very often bulkier than they need to be.
