Hi guys,

I'm getting ready to cast up some of the Lyman 12GA "wasp waist" slugs, and I'd like to confirm the load data.

I plan to use Winchester AA hulls, the WAA12F114 wads, and Hodgson Universal powder with a Winchester 209 primer.

I have load data for a standard 1 1/4oz shot load, that puts me around 24gr of Universal using the above components.

I also found an excerpt from the Lyman Shotgun loading manual online that says 29.5gr of Universal is correct with these components.

Can someone confirm that this is a valid load? I'd rather not rely on second-hand info without hearing from someone who's done it.

Thanks!

John

I have the new manual, I can look and see when I get home tonight and let you know. I use two loads, one with an RP same wad and primer with unique and a fed gold medal with same wad, fed 209a and longshot. I've never used Universal, but I do recall the Universal load being higher in grains than the Unique. I'll check it tonight and post.

OK, here's what the good book says:
Winchester HS or compression formed AA hull
27.0 grains of Universal
WAA12F114 wad
Win. 209 primer
1364 FPS
10,800 psi
This is for the 525 grain lyman sabot slug with standard fold crimp.

Sweet...I think I'll go for the 27gr load for my "heavy" load, and the 1 1/4oz shot with 24gr load for the "light" recipe.

Will post some results!

make sure what ever you do to try one and make sure it all fits in the hull, I have had recipies that just plain don't fit. For what it's worth it seems that the most trouble I've had is with 1-1/4 oz. shot loads.

I'm going to a gun show tomorrow and high on my list of items to look for is shotgun powder--I cast a bunch of 525g Sabot slugs yesterday and want to get started. My (4th Ed.) Lyman manual shows a charge of 29g Univ. Clays with the Win. compression formed plastic cases--I guess that is the AA hull?. Other listed loads with this slug are for SR4756 so I guess those are the powders I'll be looking for. Pete
