I bought a '95 winchester made by miroku. It is high gloss blued with checkered walnut furniture. Very nice gun. The only problem I have with it is the buckhorn style rear sight. This thing is in 30-06. It needs a sight that allows a bit more precision. Any suggestions for a good replacement? I've seen the lyman #21 replicas and the Williams offerings.

While I'm at it, are there any quirks to these rifles that I should know about? I don't plan on shooting African big game loads in it.

Anybody load cast for these guns? Any tips or tricks?

I put an old Redfield receiver sight on my 95 in 30-40. Found on ebay.

It would be nice to find something with adjustment knobs.

The classic aperture sight for the Model 95 was the "Climin' Lyman."

I believe that someone is making a replica of it. My brother's Model 95 uses a tang sight that seems to work well.

.

I mounted an XS peepsight meant for a Marlin (before XS made peepsight kits of front/peep) on the flat surface atop the rear of bolt on my .405 Miroku 1895.

A Williams WGRS peep sight with a flat base will mount the same way.

This is a Williams SKS peep sight modified to fit the 1895's bolt top, similar to the others mentioned:

The latest issue of "Rifle" magazine by Wolfe publishing has an article about Skinner aperature sights and on page 12 there is a Skinner Sights LLC advertizement with a nice picture of one of their sights mounted to the bolt of what appears to be a Miroku model 95. www.skinnersights.com. I myself have a Williams reciever sight on my japchester in 405 Win. The Skinner by far is better looking.

I find that my Browning copy of the Winchester Model 95 chambered in 30/06 that shoots expetionally well with its factory semi buckhorn sight:

5 shots offhand at 100 yards.

I have a Miroku Model 95 in 405 Winchester that shoots very well with its factory sight as well (sadly no pics of that one).

Good morning
Have all sorts of Model 1895's and a new 405 also. The sights one them work very well out to 150 yards hunting. Most our shots are under 100 easily as we run river bottoms and woodsy places.
Are you wanting to shoot 3-500 yards ?

I may take some long shots like that. Mainly, I want something that will allow my to easily change zero depending on what load I'm using. I might shoot anything from a jacketed hunting load to a cast plinking load out of this thing. Sometimes I like to do some long range shooting for fun. Once I've learned the gun, I may take it to the bean field for some long range hog hunting.

Cryin' shame they don't have the repro of the #38, but on a 95... it is sweet. (Well, the original is, no experience with the repro... but I'd go for it. :))

My first idea was a modern version of the old Little Giant bolt sight, using an early Sako receiver sight. The Sako sight fits a tapered dovetail on top of the receiver, also used as a scope base. Opposing screws adjust for windage and the aperture rotates half a turn to raise the peep for longer range. Very neat sight. One would make a little tapered dovetail base to screw on top of the 95 bolt.

Considering everything I could think of, including esthetics, I went with the Redfield on my 95 in 30-40, but I may put the Sako on a 30 Gov't 06.

I got the repro before they came with bolt and tap. Gunsmith drilled and tapped for the front screw. If you want to shoot close the horizontal adjustment screw can ride on the bolt and adjust your sight for you. There is a set screw to prevent this. If you adjust to shoot about 150 yds (405, 350gr ~2100fps) your sight is high enough for this not to be a problem.

Available from Buffalo Arms. I got one for my Miroku 1895 SRC. Not a perfect copy but well made and sturdy.
